My boyfriend and I bought two Robovorski hamsters two days ago. One was bigger than the other and had a meaner disposition, but they were both sweet overall. We were unsure of the sex of the hamsters, but we knew they were both either girls or both boys. Now, the bigger one has grown even larger, and there are nipples visible on her belly. She's torn up the toilet paper I put in the cage and made a bed in the upper compartment and put food underneath it. She's also very active and is constantly running in the wheel in the cage. From all the websites I've looked at, these things seem to indicate a pregnancy, but I'm still not sure. Her bed/nest isn't very big, and she keeps attacking the other, smaller hamster, tearing out bits of her fur. Is it normal for these two to be this territorial? In the pet store, the bigger one would chase the smaller one around, but never actually attack it.

Tissue tearing and storing food is behaviour of all hamsters, but as she is getting larger and her nipples are more visible, she could be.
Hamsters produce their litter very quickly. Its around 16 days after mating that they give birth, so you will find out very soon.
Hamsters are territorial creatures and really should be housed seperatly once adulthood is reached or fighting can result in death.

In truth, some will fight. Why is unknown. If she is pregnant, that's probably it, and you'll have to seperate them. If not, yuo may well have to anyway. Certainly if blood is drawn, they'll need separating..

I would keep the hamsters apart.
Most likely she is prgnant, but you will for sure find out within a wk or maybe less. All hamsters tear up toilet papaer thats normal, and so is storing food. For the little one if she is pregnant she might be more territorial or trying to protct her litter. You might want to think about seperating them to the maybe litter is born. =]

Yes, but I spoil my hamsters too. I've got a Syrian hamster named Teddy(male) and a Campbell's Russian Dwarf hamster named Knurla(female). Knurla means dwarf in Dwarf language in Eragon. Anyway don't worry about it. Who wouldn't want to spoil that cute little fuzzball?

But don't use bed fluff! Not only can your hammie eat it and cause digestive problems but it can also break her limbs if her leg gets caught.
Well, to be honest, yes, she IS spoiled, but I think that's a good thing! Pets (especially small animals like hamsters) usually like all the attention they get from their owners. Her cage/playhouse looks like so much fun (for a rodent, of course). By the way, "spoiling" your lil princess is like taking really good care of her. All in all, you should be happy that you're doing such a fantastic job of caring for your hamster. She'll thank you by loving you back as much as she can. Have fun and best of luck!

Is My Rat Sick?
A few months ago, I adopted 2 female rats. One has always been very anti-social, but all of a sudden -- she bites when you get near her. She eats %26 drinks well, but I wonder if there's something internally wrong with her. Thanks.

If the bonding exercises were put into practice and they didn't work for her then she could be a rat's rat and doesn't want to have anything to do with humans. By anti-social do you mean she doesn't want to have anything with you, with her cagemate, or both of you? If this is the way it is to be then you will have to accept her for the way she is. I have had 200 rats in the last 11 years, some love me and want to be with me, others don't, and I just don't force the issue.
She could be a fear-biter, just terrified of your hands, especially if she associates that hand with an unpleasamt smell or touch in the past. Did, or is, anyone in your family teasing/tormenting her?
She could be territorial of her cage? This can happen if a rat is never removed from the cage to play out on the floor, or table, or couch. How is she when she is outside of the cage?
Try the bonding/training/forced socialization exercises over again and see if that doesn't help:

Your rat is not sick, just smart. Rats are smart and your rat just learned that when she doesnt want to be bothered all she has to do is bite and you pull your hand away and dont bother her. Put on some leather gloves and just resocialize her buy picking her up and spending at least 15 min with her a day. I have 2 rats and same as you I have one that is extremely social and one that is not as social. The one that is less social went through a bitting phase that lasted about a week in which every time i went to pick her up she bit my finger but i still went ahead and picked her up. After about a week she quit bitting and its been about 2 months and she hasnt bitten me again since.

She might be sick... Does she stay very still a lot, too? That's another sign that she's in pain, along with biting. If not, you might want to try offering her food. Never getting close to her, but letting her come to you to take it. She'll start to associate you with yummy things. But if she still bites, then definately the vet. It's good to get them both a check up anyway.
As Mike K said, she knows you'll leave her alone if she bites you. You have to work with her and not let the biting stop you. I know it's hard but if you leave her alone when she bites it's going to get worse.
I recently recieved two unsocial female rats. One sqeeled like crazy when you tryed to take her out and the other bit the crap out of me.
You have to gain their trust. Try to give them treats, not through the bars, that makes the problem worse. Open the cage door and hand them treats. If they take it try to pet them, just take it VERY slow. Don't reach in and try to grab her, slowly put your hand in the cage and pet her, slowly getting your hand around her waist, then slowly pull her out.
It may take a few days before you can even get her to let you pet her, but she will come around eventually. You just have to be presistant and slow.

Male rats have huge testicles, can't miss them, we affectionally call them "cushions", "goolies", "pads", "paint brushes".

Is my rat laughing?
I just got a pet rat, and he loves to sit on my shoulder. Sometimes, though, he gets on my shoulder and starts rhythmically twitching, and sometimes he does it so hard that I can hear his breath escaping. I've read about rat's laughing with ultrasonic signals that humans can't hear, and they do it when they're extremely happy or expecting a reward. Is my rat laughing? Or do I need to take him to the vet?

1) Bruxing and eye-boggling. It's an emotional release for rats to grind their teeth. If they really get into it, a muscle that goes from the lower jaw to the eye orbits also causes the eyes to rapidly bulge in and out.

Is My Rat In Heat?
I have 2 female rats; One's always been pretty anti-social {Moo} %26 the other very friendly {Oreo}. Earlier this morning I noticed Moo sniffing Oreo's hind-quarters, chasing her around the cage, %26 humping her. Both are around 6 months old, %26 this is not the first time I've noticed this behavior .. It's the first time it's happened the most.

usually same sex humping is a way of establishing dominance. if this behavior seriously bothers you get them spayed. when your rat is in heat, the easiest way to tell is when you pet her rump she will arch her back ,wiggle her ears,or she may seem agitated when you touch her butt.she may also seem more hyper or grumpy.good luck!

Is my rat ill or just dull?
My husband and I just adopted a rat yesterday, he's 5 months old and very sweet. The only thing is, he doesn't play, he doesn't eat anything he's offered other than rat food. He moves around his cage a bit, just inspecting things, sometimes he goes in a tube, but he doesn't use his wheel, and whenever I take him out of his cage to play, which is quite a bit, he basically just walks around on the bed, or lays down next to me. He sounds a bit snuffly every once in a while, and he chatters his teeth, but I wouldn't say he's ill looking. Maybe he's just getting used to the new home? Also, we have 2 cats, and one of them tries to get at him a lot, so maybe he's a bit nervous? Or maybe he's just very boring and this is all his idea of a good time? If that's the case, then no problem, I just hope he's alright! We're thinking about getting him neutered so he can have a friend. Any help would be appreciated!

This is what is called the "Honeymoon Period" for pet keepers. You bring an animal home and they seem scared, subdued, and dull. He's just trying to figure out what his new home is all about, and it could be that the smell/sight of the cats is indeed making him overly cautious.

Five months is an older rat to be adopting, usually people get their babies when they are around 6 to 12 weeks of age. Do you know if he had a cage partner before you got him or has he always been a lone rat? It would make a big difference in how you procede with introductions to a new friend, if he already had a cage partner before you got him.

If you are considering neutering him just be aware that surgery for rats is different then surgery for dogs and cats, and some rats do not survive their surgery. My suggestion would be to just keep him as a single boy rather then put him through surgery.

I'm sorry but in my own professional experience both the pet store people and the SPCA people HAVE to tell you that in order to cover themselves. You see, if they said go for it and something did go wrong during introductions it would be a bad reflection on their buisnesses. When you join rat-only groups http://groups.yahoo.com/group/holistarat... you will learn from expert rat keepers, and breeders, how to do the introduction right. People can have rats/breed rats for 20 years and not know much about them, and yet others can have rats/breed rats for 5 years and know everything about them.

well, youve only had him for a day, dont worry about it, it takes time for them to get used to their new home, just leave him alone for a few days (this will be difficult for you, but just do it) He should be fine as soon as he gets used to you, he should be a fun rat
Yay! Rats are great pets, and all of them are really different once you get to know them. Some are playful, some are serene, some are hyper, some are sweet. He just might be a mellow-jello kind of rat.
Give him a pat on the head for me!
From experience I'd say your rat is adjusting. He will need time, and changes should be introduced in gradual steps.
He's a little older so he's used to things being a certain way, and now things are different. Give him time (several days) to adapt. Pet him in his new cage infrequently and keep him on the plain rat food for a while. Eating anything is a sign he is generally healthy. The sniffling could easily clear up soon (his old home could have been too dirty). Chattering teeth is a sign of contentment, but grinding or clocking the teeth together is a sign of agression, like a warning to other animals that he has big dangerous teeth.
Let him figure out the cage and the toys on his own. As for the cats, try to keep them away during the adjustment period. After a few days you will get to know his personality and can tell if he's feeling more at home.
After he's settled and feeling comfortable, take him out more and try to play, rewarding him with treats in moderation.
After he is comfortable and dependent on the two of you, see about getting him a friend, although he will be just as happy alone with you two and the cats. I'm not sure what to say about neutering, but I can say I have two litter-mates that were good buddies until they were about a year old then began to fight often. They live separately now and don't seem to miss or even recognize eachother. However, I previously had another pair who were best friends until one died.
Give him time and don't worry too much. It sounds like he trusts you already. Good luck!

he needs time to absorb it all and realise this is his forever home.
his snuffles are probably due to nerves and his chattering teeth is known as bruxing they can do this when nervous and when happy and contented, like a cat purring, when hes super relaxed and happy you might see him boggling, which is when he trembles all over and his eyes vibrate[scary the first time you see it]
buck rats rarely use a wheel they are just too lazy, they, unlike super hyper girls, like nothing more than a cuddle, theyre not known as squish monsters for nothing
also if hes on his own he will be more nervous, rats are sociable creatures and fret if kept alone, you really should have gotten two same sex rats together, its a total myth that they wont bond with you if they arent kept alone, its more likely theyll be to scared to bond with you because they are alone

This is what is called the "Honeymoon Period" for pet keepers. You bring an animal home and they seem scared, subdued, and dull. He's just trying to figure out what his new home is all about, and it could be that the smell/sight of the cats is indeed making him overly cautious.
He should be coming out of his shell within the week, showing you his true personality. If he isn't, get back to me at spazrats@yahoo.ca and we can discuss this further.
Five months is an older rat to be adopting, usually people get their babies when they are around 6 to 12 weeks of age. Do you know if he had a cage partner before you got him or has he always been a lone rat? It would make a big difference in how you procede with introductions to a new friend, if he already had a cage partner before you got him.

If you are considering neutering him just be aware that surgery for rats is different then surgery for dogs and cats, and some rats do not survive their surgery. My suggestion would be to just keep him as a single boy rather then put him through surgery.

I'm sorry but in my own professional experience both the pet store people and the SPCA people HAVE to tell you that in order to cover themselves. You see, if they said go for it and something did go wrong during introductions it would be a bad reflection on their buisnesses. When you join rat-only groups http://groups.yahoo.com/group/holistarat... you will learn from expert rat keepers, and breeders, how to do the introduction right. People can have rats/breed rats for 20 years and not know much about them, and yet others can have rats/breed rats for 5 years and know everything about them.

well, youve only had him for a day, dont worry about it, it takes time for them to get used to their new home, just leave him alone for a few days (this will be difficult for you, but just do it) He should be fine as soon as he gets used to you, he should be a fun rat
Yay! Rats are great pets, and all of them are really different once you get to know them. Some are playful, some are serene, some are hyper, some are sweet. He just might be a mellow-jello kind of rat.

From experience I'd say your rat is adjusting. He will need time, and changes should be introduced in gradual steps.
He's a little older so he's used to things being a certain way, and now things are different. Give him time (several days) to adapt. Pet him in his new cage infrequently and keep him on the plain rat food for a while. Eating anything is a sign he is generally healthy. The sniffling could easily clear up soon (his old home could have been too dirty). Chattering teeth is a sign of contentment, but grinding or clocking the teeth together is a sign of agression, like a warning to other animals that he has big dangerous teeth.
Let him figure out the cage and the toys on his own. As for the cats, try to keep them away during the adjustment period. After a few days you will get to know his personality and can tell if he's feeling more at home.
After he's settled and feeling comfortable, take him out more and try to play, rewarding him with treats in moderation.
After he is comfortable and dependent on the two of you, see about getting him a friend, although he will be just as happy alone with you two and the cats. I'm not sure what to say about neutering, but I can say I have two litter-mates that were good buddies until they were about a year old then began to fight often. They live separately now and don't seem to miss or even recognize eachother. However, I previously had another pair who were best friends until one died.

his snuffles are probably due to nerves and his chattering teeth is known as bruxing they can do this when nervous and when happy and contented, like a cat purring, when hes super relaxed and happy you might see him boggling, which is when he trembles all over and his eyes vibrate[scary the first time you see it]
buck rats rarely use a wheel they are just too lazy, they, unlike super hyper girls, like nothing more than a cuddle, theyre not known as squish monsters for nothing
also if hes on his own he will be more nervous, rats are sociable creatures and fret if kept alone, you really should have gotten two same sex rats together, its a total myth that they wont bond with you if they arent kept alone, its more likely theyll be to scared to bond with you because they are alone

Is my rabbit sick?
I have two miniature lop rabbits (a buck and a doe) and I decided to breed them. Both the buck and doe were healthy before the breeding took place. After the breeding, my buck started to act funny. He started to lay around more and breathe heavy. His coat got dull and rough. I thought at first that he was just tired. But after two months, he was still like this. My doe never had babies so he didn't even get her pregnant. I don't know how old either of them is because I bought them at an animal auction. So I guess my question is... Is my buck sick because of the breeding or could it be something else?

They might be to old or too young for breeding. He might have been sick before you bought him and it just didn't show until later. Lots of times rabbits are bred they don't actually end up pregnant, it probably wasn't because he might be sick that she didn't get pregnant. I don't think it was breeding that made him sick.

Are they in the heat? Rabbits can't tolerate heat. Have they been vet checked? Make sure no intestinal parasites or upper respiratory infections. Are you sure they are male and female? 2) You just decided to breed them...there are to many people who do this just for the experience and all it does is bring more rabbits into the world which may never find homes (i.e. Check out shelters they are always over run).
3) You waited two months before bringing your rabbit to a vet.
Take them both for check ups ASAP and from now on if they start acting weird for more then 24 hrs bring them to the vet right away. Rabbits are fragile and wonderful pets, but they can succumb to desease quickly if left untreated

Also, anytime a rabbit's coat isn't well groomed, something's wrong--they keep themselves immaculately clean. All petstores have a guarantee that if your pet becomes ill a week or two after you buy it, bring it in and they will replace it. One of my pet rats was sneezing a lot a week after i bought him, but i took him to the vet and they gave him some medicine and he was better a week later.
While pets do get red stuff around their eyes when they are stressed or ill. Have you moved him to a new location or cage?

Thats so sad. If there is absolutely no way to get him to a vet then take him as soon as possible! I hope he's okay but it doen't sound good. Check the insides of his ears to see if he is oxygenating well , they should be pink, not white or purple. Also if not sure check his gums, also should be pink, not purple or white. If he isn't put a fan on him to keep the oxygen getting to him. Keep him warm, but not to warm and well hydrated!! Hydration is very important.

what your referring to is a P.E.W. (pink eyed white rat) if your not sure why not ask spazrats. she has a great knowledge of rats and would be able to tell you from the pics that you provided. but if you want my opinion it does look like a pew.
It looks like a PEW and definitely has red eyes, but it could also be a light beige variety. There are a lot of different rat coat colours. Any chance of taking a pic with better lighting?

Is my panda bear hamster from a private breeder?
i just got her 4 days ago but i noticeing that she doesnt bite loves to be petted and held and is very easliy learning to use the potty in her cage.we bought her at petco and i no some breeders do give them to pet stores and the pet store never never never ever gets panda bear hamsters.i mean she is so sweet and give kisses when u pet her and everything i mean it's crazy but i think she is already tamed cause i have not found a hammy like her that acts like this without weeks of taming.is it possible because they are so rare around my area??

You got lucky. Petco and PetSmart do NOT accept hamsters from private breeders. Some hamsters are more 'people-hamsters' than others. She can also probably tell that you love her and aren't going to hurt her :)
Also, remember that panda bear hamsters are just a color variation of a Syrian hamster.
It's a possibility. It's also possible you got a hamster with a very sweet disposition. This happens sometimes, even without private breeding or the animals being handled.
Some hamsters just take to people quicker than others do. It's possible that she was also held more in the store. Petco usually gets their hamsters from the same places and don't take from local breeders so I doubt it. I have seen some hamsters that were ready to be handled right at the store before while others need more time to get used to being handled. I remember one male when I was looking that walked up to me and straight into my hand. The one my husband chose took weeks to tame, but he was worth it. It all depends on the hamster and what they've been exposed to.
i bought my 3 hamsters at petsmart and they are sweet too, it's just getting a good one and treating it right, they are lovable animals, and I'm sure these petstores deal with decent breeders or companies, otherwise they wouldn't sell so many pets. good luck and have fun
Hey, I have got a teddy bear hamster just like you do he is a golden brown hamster called Ned and he was very tame when i got him he only bit when i was taking him out of the box that they put him in. And then after a couple of hours he was very calm and when i went to pick him up he didn't try to bite me or anything, he just walked from one palm of my hand to the other and he also took treats straight away from my hand. You can get some hamsters that are like that from pet shops because some hamsters are clam while others are very fast and aggressive to you.

You got lucky. Petco and PetSmart do NOT accept hamsters from private breeders. Some hamsters are more 'people-hamsters' than others. She can also probably tell that you love her and aren't going to hurt her :)
Also, remember that panda bear hamsters are just a color variation of a Syrian hamster.
It's a possibility. It's also possible you got a hamster with a very sweet disposition. This happens sometimes, even without private breeding or the animals being handled.
Some hamsters just take to people quicker than others do. It's possible that she was also held more in the store. Petco usually gets their hamsters from the same places and don't take from local breeders so I doubt it. I have seen some hamsters that were ready to be handled right at the store before while others need more time to get used to being handled. I remember one male when I was looking that walked up to me and straight into my hand. The one my husband chose took weeks to tame, but he was worth it. It all depends on the hamster and what they've been exposed to.
i bought my 3 hamsters at petsmart and they are sweet too, it's just getting a good one and treating it right, they are lovable animals, and I'm sure these petstores deal with decent breeders or companies, otherwise they wouldn't sell so many pets. good luck and have fun
Hey, I have got a teddy bear hamster just like you do he is a golden brown hamster called Ned and he was very tame when i got him he only bit when i was taking him out of the box that they put him in. And then after a couple of hours he was very calm and when i went to pick him up he didn't try to bite me or anything, he just walked from one palm of my hand to the other and he also took treats straight away from my hand. You can get some hamsters that are like that from pet shops because some hamsters are clam while others are very fast and aggressive to you.

Is my mouse pregnant?
I found a mouse in my living room and it was so friendly that I decided to keep it. I can't tell if it is a male or female. it is pretty round. (but it might just be fat) all it does is hide in it's box and I've never seen an animal drink so much water. how can you tell?

ok, this is how you tell between a boy mouse and a girl mouse. Brace your self. Pick up the mouse (if it will let you) and lift up its tail. I think it will be pretty obvious. (the males have balls) if your mouse doesnt have ehhemm. testicles, then it is a girl and it could be pregnant. Try giving it some kind of nesting material and see if it tries to make a nest. If it does, you likely have a pregnant mouse. Congrats!

The best thing you can do is just wait. The gestation period is only about 16-21 days, so if she feels pregnant to you then she will have the little mice soon. Give her lots of shredded paper towel or buy her some bedding at a pet store to nest in- she'll enjoy that whether or not she's expecting. Also, make sure to get her lots of protein. Congrats on the new pet!

Is my male rat going through puberty?
I'm not sure how old he is, but suddenly he's gotten a lot more energetic and bold. He now refuses to sit on my shoulder like he used to, instead running up and down my back or arm. When I play with him, he turns as if he's going to bite me (he hasn't yet, but still). I've noticed this kind of behavior in dogs when they're in relative puberty years. If you are playing with your boy and you touch his rump during one of his testosterone-hightened periods, he may take your hand as an aggressive attack and turn to bite. During these wild periods it is best not to antagonize him and wait for him to calm down.

If not than I think he became "bored" at the normal routine and he wants new stuff and explore more, like what they do in nature.
My male rat goes through stages. For instance yesterday morning all he wanted to do was be stroked and cuddled when I held him. I got him out later on, and I couldn't keep him still! Then not long ago I got him out, ahdn he just sat on my lap. It was a bit like having a tiny puppy, complete with the licking and nibbling.
Other than that, a week ago I couldn't open the cage without him trying to come out. Last couple of days I've had to pick him up.
As for the biting thing, say "No" firmly when he goes to do it, and push him away (not too hard, don't wanna hurt him). My rat responds to No now. Well 50% of the time, anyway. I have found that often he tends to nibble me though, I don't think they mean to hurt at all, but if you watch male rats playing together they sometimes seem to "play-fight", i think that's all your rat is doing.

Is my MALE guinea pig too old to breed?
I have a male guinea pig (moe) that is 6 years old (he will be 7 around christmas time) and I was wondering if he is too old to breed. My female (twinki) is about 6-8 months old and I know she is still in the age range of breeding. And to all the people who are going to tell me not to breed just know that I have PLENTY of cages and space and I have been doing research on everything about breeding for months now. And I also have a specialized vet for back up just incase something does go wrong, so you wont be able to change my mind about trying to breed them. I just want to know if Moe is not to old to "preform"

Although female pigs are fertile at two months of age or earlier, they should not be breed until they are 4-5 month old and weigh a little over a pound. The male used should be about double her age to insure potency.. A bigger problem is breeding female guinea pigs for the first time when they are too old. At 7-12 month of age the female鈥檚 pelvic bones fuse, making natural delivery next to impossible. So guinea pigs of this age that are having a first litter often need it delivered by cesarean section (dystocia). Baby pigs arrive after a pregnancy of 60-70 days. They are precocious and arrive fully developed. Babies suckle their mothers for about three weeks (180gms) and then are able to eat the same foods as their parentddddddds. Litter size ranges between one and eight. Be sure to handle the babies often at this age so that they become tame.
There's really only one way to find that out.

Is my Hamsters nesting habits weird?
My Syriane's Hamster appeared to be nesting under her Water Bottle, she had dragged all the cotton stuff (from the pet store) that I put in to her cage under there.
But then she climbed the tube to her lookout area, where she is stock pilling her food, then went to sleep up there.
What is that? Should I put some cotton stuff up there to help her out?

Nah, she's just sleeping in different areas, trying to find that best place to make a permanent nest. It's like you trying all the rooms in your house to see which will make the best bedroom.
She'll stuff her cheeks with the bedding material and move it up there if she makes a permanent nest up there. Kinda like you would move your pillows and blankets into the room you were sleeping in.
She's just being a normal hamster. Stockpiling food is normal also. Like keeping treats under your bed! :)

He will use them to make his nest, will chew on them, and have a great time.
Newspaper is made with nontoxic inks, and a scientific study showed that the newspaper is even a good addition to a hamster's diet as well as good nesting material and absorbent cage bedding.
No leave her alone. She'll shift her stuff right back where she wants it anyway. Normally they like to keep their food and sleeping quaters in separate areas. Just enjoy the show. Hamsters do this kind of thing all the time.

Is my hamster supposed to urinate?
I kinda remember that an employee at Petco said that hamsters aren't supposed to urinate (something like that) and my friend's hamster urinates too and she says that it's a natural thing that hamsters do. Should I believe some stranger from Petco or my best friend that has been my best friend since 3rd Grade?

As you now know, yes they urinate. There are however some illnesses that can cause a hamster to urinate much less frequently. Wet tail is the most deadly hamster disease, and it causes severe dehydration as the hamster will go off its food and water. So if you ever notice your hamster no longer shows any interest in drinking its water, then it's important that you get medical help immediately.
I've had hamsters that i've managed to save from wet-tail by hand feeding them water (just holding them and squeezing water into their mouths with a pippette.)
I know that's off subject, but you should always be prepared for it, as it's a very common disease. If you should ever notice your hamster behaving strangely, then feel free to email me. I have many years of experiance with these lovely creatures and have a very good success rate with helping them recover from illnesses.
Anyway. Last thing i'd like to add, is that you should never really trust the advice of petco workers. I used to get my hamsters there, and they were often unhealthy and ill to start with. I find that many (although not all) of their workers just don't have a clue about hamsters. Which is a shame, as they often give incorrect advice to people that can lead to many terrible consequences. I once heard staff there telling a woman that it is fine to keep 2 male syrians in a cage together. As i'm sure you know, that is NOT good advice, as they will undoubtedly fight to the death! I had to tell the woman that they could NOT live together. Boy were the staff red faced!

As you now know, yes they urinate. There are however some illnesses that can cause a hamster to urinate much less frequently. Wet tail is the most deadly hamster disease, and it causes severe dehydration as the hamster will go off its food and water. So if you ever notice your hamster no longer shows any interest in drinking its water, then it's important that you get medical help immediately.
I've had hamsters that i've managed to save from wet-tail by hand feeding them water (just holding them and squeezing water into their mouths with a pippette.)
I know that's off subject, but you should always be prepared for it, as it's a very common disease. If you should ever notice your hamster behaving strangely, then feel free to email me. I have many years of experiance with these lovely creatures and have a very good success rate with helping them recover from illnesses.
Anyway. Last thing i'd like to add, is that you should never really trust the advice of petco workers. I used to get my hamsters there, and they were often unhealthy and ill to start with. I find that many (although not all) of their workers just don't have a clue about hamsters. Which is a shame, as they often give incorrect advice to people that can lead to many terrible consequences. I once heard staff there telling a woman that it is fine to keep 2 male syrians in a cage together. As i'm sure you know, that is NOT good advice, as they will undoubtedly fight to the death! I had to tell the woman that they could NOT live together. Boy were the staff red faced!

We have 7 female Syrians and have experienced this many times. I've picked up one and have had the unpleasure of getting sprayed by them. There is a product available at most pet stores for this smell. It's not very cheap either, about $10-14 a bottle or less on sale. You ad it to their water end it helps control the odor. We use it with some of our more smelly ones. Below is the product we use.

Maybe it's the food she's eating, you should check the label or bring her into PetSmart or somewhere like that and ask them.

Is my hamster sick?
My hamster started sleeping outside her house today in a corner of the cage but she has never done that before. She's very active and runs around the house lots but she started sleeping a little earlier (12:00 P.M.) but sometimes she wakes up early (7:00 AM) and goes to sleep later (9:00 AM).
My guesses are that either it's getting hot inside her house or she feels safer outside (since sometimes we have to lift up her house to get her out of there while she's sleeping) or in the worst case, she's sick.
What's going on and what should I do?

I have had my male syrian a year. His sleeping patterns are really eratic. Some nights I will not see him at all ( i go to bed really late) and he will be awake in the morning wanting to come out while im rushing around trying to get ready for work. other evenings he is awake on and of all evening long. Sometimes I dont see him for a few days!
He has a 3 storey cage, and he has a seperate bedroom at the top of the cage, the 3rd level, where he always sleeps. But maybe once a month, sometimes more, or sometimes less, he will take all his bedding and move it to another level of the cage where there is no seperate private area for him to sleep and creates his nest randomly there instead.
Make sure in the hotter months you give her slightly less bedding. Last summer Harry was really grumpy and would just flop out on the sawdust to sleep rather than in his bedding.

My dwarf hamster has been sleeping near the a.c. duct and lately he has been squeaking non stop. i think he may have a cold and he never stops squeaking. Whats wrong? should i show a vet?

Also, make sure that your hamster is eating, and, drinking water. Keep checking on your hamster to see if anything happens. If you see anything unusal, then, yes, take your hamster to the vet! But, if everything gets back to normal, then, your hamster should be fine. If it is a wheezing then I suggest calling a vet better safe than sorry. If it is an illness then they may be able to give a medicine to fix the problem.
Well, check and see if your hamster has wet tail. Wet tail is when hamsters get dhirea and there little bodies can't take it, so they die. The only way to cure it is feed it dry tail medicibe in their water. Your supposed to put it in there water every time you change it. I had a hamster that survived it, so maybe your hamster will too! I'll be praying for your little hamster! Good Luck!

He prob will die and next time keep any animal away from the airflow and move him but i am sure it is to late. take him to a pet store and have them look at them make sure it is a pet store that knows what they are talking about they may have medicine there for him or her

Is my hamster sick...?
I'm scared she is sick, but I'm not sure exactly. She is a Syrian teddy bear hamster, and shes only about 1 month old. It might be a common cold because I bought her a few days ago and it was raining, so possibly some rain got on her and she got a chill. She sometimes shivers but I've never seen her sneeze. She grooms herself a lot and she sleeps all day, only sometimes getting up to eat, drink and go to bed again. If it is the common cold will she get better by just resting and sleeping in a warm place? Do you think she will die? I don't think my parents will let me go and take her to the vet:( I don't think its wet tail because she poops pellets instead of mushy stuff, her eyes are okay and normal and her tail isn't wet. There might be nothing wrong with her and she might be perfectly healthy and I'm just over worrying but I really wanna be sure. Thanks!

If you know that your hamster is female, it is very difficult to tell if your hamster is actually pregnant. Only from about 2 days before giving birth will your hamster look fatter than normal. Syrian hamsters are pregnant for around 16 days so you will know for sure in a fairly small period of time.
If she is pregnant, you need to be prepared. Get yourself a nice book on the subject of breeding hamsters and follow the diet and housing advice in it. Occasionally hamsters will cannibalize on one or more of their own pups - this is thought to happen when the mother is very young or overly agitated. For this reason, try to give the new family lots of peace and quiet in a warm room for the first few days after birth. As soon as they are born, you should try to start finding homes for the young, as you don't want to still have them past sexual maturity. My hamster did this when she was pregnant and it usually happens when they are due soon. I would pop some special clean bedding into the cage for her to take into her nest (you can get special cotton wool type stuff that is good for babies as some of the other stuff you can buy is not suitable-check the packet) and just wait. If babies appear, don't touch them or she may eat them- they will come out when they are ready.
It could be however that the babies are already here if she won't let you touch the nest but is ok with you changing food etc?

If you know that your hamster is female, it is very difficult to tell if your hamster is actually pregnant. Only from about 2 days before giving birth will your hamster look fatter than normal. Syrian hamsters are pregnant for around 16 days so you will know for sure in a fairly small period of time.

Four days ago I awoke to find that my male Teddy Bear Hamster in my female Dwarf's cage! He loves to escape, we find him all over the house. I think he might have dropped off my desk into Avril's cage trying to get down. Or maybe he was trying to get to her? Avril: HATES HIM! She beats him up and squeaks at him. I'm suprised he wasn't injured. They were on seperate ends of Avril's large cage. Is it possible they bred? If so, will the babies by hybrids, or just normal hamsters? I've been considering breeding Avril for a while, but to a Dwarf. HELP! Do you think she is pregnant? Is there a way to tell if they bred? Will shebe able to carry that size of baby hamsters? Or will the genes even out ok? I know I ca care for and find homes for baby hams, but is it even possible for them to have bred, and come through?

My Hamster ran away for 3 days..We found her like 2 days ago.. Since shes been back she has been acting different..She drinks a LOT of water and has made a nest in her hidding spot. Just to clear things up Hamsters can crossbreed I had a hamster and rat in the same cage once because I only had one cage (the cage I got for the rat broke so I put them together until I could get another thankfully they got along) and they had a litter of 7 Rampsters :)
as for your questionI had an albino hamster get loose one time for 5-6 days when we found her she lazed about and smelt bad (really bad...like death ~.~) she also drank lots of water and she was pregnant but I think she got pregnant before she got loose (we had 3 males and one of them went missing 2 weeks before and we never found him :( ) so I don't know if one of the 2 males in the cage impregnated her or if she found what eluded us ;)

IS my hamster peeing?
Ive never seen my hamster pee or feel the urine in the bedding. im using aspen. actually the only time i saw him pee was when he did it in the ball.

hi, i am very worried about my little hammy. ok, i have dropped it twice from about 4 ft onto soft carpet, and once, i forgot to close something so it got out of its cage. so i had to chase it, but i have only had her for 2 days. but wen i picked her up to put her back, she squeled. i am really worried about her. all i want is for her to still like me. do u think she will still like me after all that? please, i really love teddy and i want her to become tame and love me. i feel VERY sorry for her.

I have hamsters of my own. About three or four years of experience. Trust me, it's going to be okay. You need to give her some time.a few days or even a week to steadily adjust to her new home. They're still very delicate and can get easily frightened. I know that when I brought home my Oreo, she was very scared. She ran across our table leaving "presents" everywhere and cried when we went near her. Today, we're the best of friends and things couldn't possibly be any better. Just give her some time to herself and then gradually introduce yourself to her. Let her know there can be trust established between the two of you. Once that's accomplished, you'll be okay. :)

then go back home and play with her and give her treats when to hold her be sitting down you should not drop her again she with get used to you again and be gentle if she does not want to come out of the cage give her the treats once a day in the cage till she wants to come out

Try to keep your hamster low to the ground and keep a box under you. that way, if you drop your hamster, then, he won't get hurt, and he won't be able to run away since he will be in a box! its not that big of a concern they just do that for some reason but just to make sure go to a vet and see what they say
here are some clue for u to know:
Hissing ---- threatening sound made when attacking or during countship
Screeching ---- sound of defense and expression of great fear when threatened by an enemy or predator.
Teeth chattering ---- Aggression; an urgent warning addressed to a enemy
Squealing ---- Aggression; accompanies minor fighting
Growling, muttering ---- Aggression; uttered by the males after copulation.
Squeaking ---- Sound made by baby hamsters when they feel abandoned.

hamsters make sqweeky noisis all the time . but if he is wheezing maby you need to clean his cage and make sure he always has water.he might be thursty

my hamster has fallen from a 4 foot drop twice and now he is not acting normal, but he can still walk. do you think hes hurt? plz help@

Is my hamster healthy?
i just bought her.
shes verrry fat and cute :] but she keeps her eyes somewhat closed, but i know they aren't stuck. is she just sleepy?
i know theyre not stuck because in the car i looked at her and shecan open them just fine. also, she went to sleep in the corner when she has an igloo in her cage. so i had to PUT her into the igloo so maybe she'll get the habit.
does this all sound normal for a new hamster?

She sounds ok, maybe a little nervous and timid, which is why her eyes are closed alot. The stress /excitment of being in a new home will probably cause her to sleep alot ( they sleep all day - mine likes to sleep most of the night too lol)
If your using very fine sawdust, the dust particals could be irritating her eyes, But just keep a check on her the next few days, and if your still unsure, get her checked over by a vet.
Don't force her to use the igloo. Sometimes, they just want to sleep outside of them. Doesn't mean they won't sleep in one.
Consider a basic health check by a vet (which I recommend for ANY new pet, soon after purchasing).

hamsters sleep a lot in the day time unless you are playing with them. if you don't already have one get her a wheel to run in . She'll do plenty of running when you are sleeping. She'll open her eyes when she wants to.
I have two male hamsters, in seperate cages, can't put them together, the older one has tried to kill the younger one. When we got them they were fat as well and lazy. Then once they got used to their cages they started climbing up the bars and hanging upside down and chewing on them. They eat all the time and when it is hot they wont sleep in their little homes, they have tvs they sleep in, but when it is cold they will either sleep in them or they will tunnel and make a warm bed under the bedding. Just keep an eye on the hamster and if she isn't better, take her to the vet. if it is really a she, she could be pregnant..That would be pretty cool. If she is and gives birth, make sure she had plenty of food or she will eat the hamsters. I had one a long time ago that gave birth and did horrible things to her babies, I will spare the details.
i would say your hamster is fine but mostly they sleep in the daylight hours and party all night but they do sleep in certain places and use the bathroom in a certain place if you just purchased her she's just getting use to the cage and sometimes they do get a cold in their eyes if this happens you will be able to tell just keep clean with a warm damp cloth ,besides the food that you buy at the store give it small pieces of fresh veggies they will like that as a treat ,mine love apples ,but they will sleep where ever they feel safe you can move them as often as you like but it will do no good .they like bedding to hide in and will place it where they want . but good luck with your new pet if its still acting strange to you in a few days take it to a vet just to be sure but give it a chance to get used to its new surroundings first.

If she's very fat and you just bought her, she may be pregnant. I just wanted you to be prepared for this just in case. You will know in under 2 weeks since they carry their babies for 16 days.

Some sleep all day and are up all night, some are up all during the day and night running their wheels are wanting to be played with. A few are odd and sleep all night, but are up during the day. Some are bar chewers and some aren't. Some are energenic and others just lay there when held. My daughter's 3 1/2 yr old (very old) male acts like a juvenile, while a 18 month old male we rescued just lays on your lap and does nothing. His dwarf room mate has to nip is butt just to wake him up all the time to do anything. It's quite funny to watch. This little 3" dwarf trying to get a 6" Syrian male hamster to "move it" in the cage. Usually he wakes up and moves to another spot in the cage and goes back to sleep. He never had access to a wheel or much play time, he was used by the former owner only for breeding purposes. When they felt he was too old for their purpose, they called me up and handed him over and told me he was of no use to them any more. It made me mad, so I got him away from their hands. He is now loved and never to be breed again.
I'm sorry. I just don't believe hamsters are worth a plug nickel. Get a real pet.

Is my hamster got mange dissease? What is the therapy?
My hamster is getting sick, she lost her feather, and her foot are getting swollen, her mouth is always wet. I gave her drink and she looks like very thirsty.. Can I give her antibiotik therapy such as cefadroxyl? and antihistamin? By the way, I am a doctor but hamster illness make me confuse... Thanks for your help..

Well then you of all people know to take the hamster to a small animal vet. They have very fragile systems and most antibiotics for cats or dogs and humans can prove fatal to them.
Mange is easily treated and I've have several with it and all of mine were treated by a qualified vet. All but one did survive, that one was very old when he got the mange. We think one we rescued may have had it since that one did have a small patch of hair missing, but he was never put in the same cage with any of the others or the one that died. We keep hand sanitizer with the cages to use in between handling the different ones and only 3 of us are in charge of them. We allow no one else to hold them and we do private home or work delivery for adoptive families. This way the animals feel safer then with a bunch of people upsetting them. Plus my insurance is cheaper then if I allowed people to come here and I need to count pennies in hard times if you understand me on this.
Mange is treated with oral antibiotics and by using a topical ointment for relieving the itch and softening the dry flacky skin. The ointment (depending on which one) can also aid with the regrowth of the hair. I wish I could remember which ointment we used to let you know for the vet.
Neither of the 2 mentioned medicined are on the below list for use in a hamster so don't use either of them. The Cefadroxyl will kill him if given in any doseage.

Is my hamster going to be okay?
I was moving from one room to another and while I was walking I accidentally kicked something (not with too much force though) soft. I looked down and it was my hamster, out on one of his nightly adventures. I immediately then picked him up and put him back in his enclosure. He seemed to act normally and I even fed him some sunflower seeds, and he ate them with gusto as its a treat he adores. Is he going to be fine...?
Kinda worried...I think I kicked his side, but im really not sure...

Your hamster is going to be fine. I am the owner of two hamsters and one of mine of fell from my hands to the tiles on the floor, the poor thing. He squeaked and lay still for a moment. I picked him up and put him back into his cage. He came around looking dazed for a few minutes, but then just went back to his old normal self. I took him to the vets as a precaution the following day and he was fine.
He sounds as if he endured no injury at all. If you wish to bring him to a vets for peace of mind, then do so.
I am 100% convinced that he will be fine!
if he is eating and drinking, i wouldn't worry too much about him
You shouldn't worry that much. My brother nearly stepped on mine and i found it perfectly normal the next few days. Unless it acts weirdly, i dont think you should worry.
if he eats, thats a good sign.. watch to see if he limps or favors one side.. if he does. take him to the vet.

He could end up stuck in something or chew an electrical wire--or get stepped on. I think you've got the idea, especially when you think you may have kicked him Just be careful. You can't "hamster-proof" your living quarters. They're better off in one of those plastic hamster balls that you see in the pet shops, if you must have him out of his enclosure. Wiremesh wheels are excellent for inside their enclosures. You should look into that, just to be safe and to keep your little guy safe. It is better to err on the side of caution. Be careful--and enjoy your little guy.

If he is still pretty active, moving normally, eating and drinking he should be good. If you are pretty worried about him/her take them to a vet. He should be just fine. My hamster jumps off my shelves:) As long as he does normal things:) Hope he is ok!
