I just bought him about a week and a half ago.
There is blood around his eyes and nose.
He isn't quite able to stand up and he looks very ill.
I can't take him to a veterinarian right now and I'm just wondering if anyone knows anything I could do to help him.

All petstores have a guarantee that if your pet becomes ill a week or two after you buy it, bring it in and they will replace it. One of my pet rats was sneezing a lot a week after i bought him, but i took him to the vet and they gave him some medicine and he was better a week later.
While pets do get red stuff around their eyes when they are stressed or ill. Have you moved him to a new location or cage?
Also, from the site ratbehavior.org, i quote..
"The red stuff sometimes seen around a rat's eyes and nose is called porphyrin. It is produced by a gland behind the eyeball and helps lubricate the eye. Porphyrin naturally drains from the eye down into the nose through a small tear duct. Small amounts of porphyrin seen every now and then are normal.
However, when a rat is stressed, it may overproduce porphyrin, which may overflow the eyelids and form a red crust around the eye. Porphyrin may also overflow the nose, creating a red crust around the nostrils. This condition is called chromodacryorrhea and is a sign of illness or stress"
argh! take him to the vet ASAP. im sick of people relying on complete strangers for answers when it's a matter of life and death for their pet.
Thats so sad. If there is absolutely no way to get him to a vet then take him as soon as possible! I hope he's okay but it doen't sound good. Check the insides of his ears to see if he is oxygenating well , they should be pink, not white or purple. Also if not sure check his gums, also should be pink, not purple or white. If he isn't put a fan on him to keep the oxygen getting to him. Keep him warm, but not to warm and well hydrated!! Hydration is very important.
yes he is, and even if you got him to a vet right now he will probably still die...i have cared for rats for a while, and he doesn't sound well at all. my hairless was very healthy, and she got sick and died in the span of a few hours
Soundsl ike he has a severe respiratory infection - which is common among rats.
If he's not able to stand, you have a serious problem on your hands.
I've had a family of rats treated for this ailment, and it reoccurs, and is sometimes fatal. The not standing up, or paralysis of the back end are pretty common signs that the end is near for that rat.
You need to try to get him to the vet, and you need to contact the store you bought him from - he was sick when you got him.
The only thing you can do is bring him to a vet. Sorry. Why can't you take him to the vet?? Anyways, you'd better kiss him goodbye..
There is supose to always have a vet on call if there's emergencies. Call your local vet and listen to everything. or if you know the vet personally call her. Well in much cases they almost nerver put there personal numbers in the phone book. But maybe chack for the receptionist name in the phonebook. Most of the time she his able to help you or give you ressources.

my rat just went through the same thing..
ReplyDeleteshe in the course of 24 hours became practically comatose.
my vet gave me this miracle food calld criticalcare.. i fed it to her through a syrynge and she was back to normal for a while...
also try seeing if she is dehydrated, check her skin turgour. for my ratt i needed to give her water through a syrynge to get her to drink when she wqas really weak, simply because she couldnt get up to get to her water.
you can try mixing it with gatorade or honey to make her more interested as well.
hope this helps.. and hope rattie gets better.
a side note...
my rat has actualy regressed slightly and today i went to give her water through the syrynge like usual but when i pushed the water in foam came out...
i gave her water 2 hours ago and this did not happen. and when she is in her cage she is fine.. i put her back and she went about her normal business (including drinking water out of her waterbottle)
if anyone knows what might be up id appreciate your thoughts.
