i have had this hampster now for almost 3 years, and she hasnt been coming out of her burrows very much lately and not eating or drinking as much. is her time almost up or am i just worrying? cuase yesterday it took me 5 mins just to get her to come out and say hi...
Answers:
shes very old for a hamster. Imagine her as a little old lady, shes not going to run around a lot. She may live quite a while yet , she just wont be as active.
Offer her more treats if shes eating less, at her age its not going to hurt her any.
You have taken excellent care of her for her to have reached that age . Just make her remaining time comfortable and happy. She may be content to come out and sit in your hands and have a treat.
Its probably just old and when they get old they get tired and wont be very active.
take him to the vet!
it is problubly time for god to take him away now cuz hamsters live up to 3-4 years
Well as long as your hamster seems physically able: eyes aren't glued shut, can walk, etc... she should be fine, but as we all know hamsters do only live three years, so take care of her, a make sure shes Happy.. If she seems to be getting worse please e-mail me and I'll try to help in any way I can.
maybe its just sad
Their life span is about 3-4 years..yeahh I had 10 hamsters growing up..when my hamster Bunny was getting older she was a bit slower and more calm and hardly came out, but she still liked to run a bit at night like usual..she passed away at 3 1/2 yrs...:(
Wow, that a fantastic age for a hamster, you should be proud of yourself, your clearly a caring, dedicated pet owner.
Hamsters generally live from 18 months to 3 years and rarely up to 5. Your hamster is old, and she is naturally slowing down, and becoming less active. But this does not mean she will die any day soon. Continue to keep an eye on her, enjoy your time with her and make sure her toilet habits have not changed and she is not looking ill or in pain.
relax she is older so she is getting laizeir its a good thing she is doing this cause this means she is comfortable with her suroundigs although she will began to get stuborn ahe will stay laizy but a hamsters life range is 1-4 years just teach her not to be stubborn and give her attintion and most of all vote me best answer.
maybe, but wait and see.

Is my hammy pregnant?
All she does is sit, and drink/eat and sleep! She has been getting alot fatter, but I never really thought that she would be having babies since I never paired her up with a male! Whenever I go to pick her up she hisses, and when she actually let me pet her belly, i felt something... is she pregnant?
Answers:
She might be but if she hasn't been with a male then i don't know. If she is it is best to be prepared. If she has the babies do NOT disturbe her or go near the babies or she will eat them. ( they do that if they think you will hurt thebabies) my brothers hamster had babies. Do some research.
Be carefull if she has babies!!!!!
Has she ever been with a male... ever? If so, then maybe.
No, just lazy.
She could be.
Although most likely she's just a typical hamster! Eating, sleeping and drinking...that's basically what many hamsters do. Especially at this time of year.
I had a hamster once that hissed when I picked him up. He was just temperamental. On the other hand I had a hamster that couldn't get enough of being handled and ate 'people' food and knew our voices and came out when we called.
You should really take your hamster to a vet. It might just be she hasn't had enough handling or is in pain?
Hamsters get tumours and things too you know. So it's worth checking out.
Good luck!
Did you just recently buy her from the pet store? She could have been with males at the pet store. My hamster had babies two weeks after I got her from the pet store. She didnt really show any signs of being pregnant. I found out because when I was cleaning her cage I lifted up her house and there were five pink bald things under there. If she hasnt been with any males for more than 2 to 4 weeks she is definitly not pregnant.
if you just got her from the pet store about 2 weeks ago, then she most likely is pregnant, because she could've been in the same cage as males if the pet store accidently mixed them up or doesn't segregate males and females. if you didn't get her about 2 weeks ago, then she could be just getting fatter. but i think shes pregnant.

Is my Guinea Pig too old to breed?
I have 2 Guinea Pigs - both female - they are 15 months old Shelties. My friend has a male. Are my two girls too old to breed with? I have read that to breed over the age of 8 months can be fatal to both mum or babies or both. Advice please? I don't want to put my girls at risk but I do want to expand my Guinea Pig family and I do want to think about showing my Shelties!
Answers:
The best age to breed female guinea pigs is 5 months. At about 8 months old their pelvic bones fuse together meaning they can't perform normal labor. You have to get them pregnant by 5 1/2 to 6 months or you'll likely face serious labor complications often resulting in the death of the sow and her babies. I understand the desire to breed guinea pigs but it's risky and not recommended. If you want to expand your family I'd suggest shelters. Many need homes and if you want to see baby guinea pigs and go through the birthing process you could try to foster a pregnant sow . I don't recommend breeding any cavies but please don't put your older pigs through it. Any guinea pigs need to have given birth before their pelvic bones fuse and then they don't fuse so unless they've given birth before you'll lose the sow and her babies.
i suggest buying another younger female. if they have never been bred from before then the pelvic bones will have fused and they wont be able to give birth, if they come into contact with a male when the end of gestation comes around they WILL die unless you have an emergency trip to the vets costing you $$$$$$$$$$
Although I am not 100% certain I would say that your sows are too old to breed, I personally would not take the chance of harming them. Another option would be to check out the rescues and shelters in your area for adoption.
Check out www.guinealynx.com everyone there is very helpful and there is some excellent info!
yes as someone else said there pelvic bones have fused. please dont breed any guinea pigs though. they can die to old or not. if u love ur guinea pigs you will not breed them. if u want to expand then adopt one from a shelter they need u.
Yes, the absolute latest age that you can breed is 10 months, with 8 months the preffered age to stop. At this age the cartilage betweent the pelvis fuse and the babies will not be able to get out. They can still breed but your sow will need a c-section, by doing this the sow and the babies will be at risk.
They are too old.
Breeding is highly discouraged because of the risk factors that are involves in it. Sows often have labor problems, and die. 1 out of 4 sows die during pregnancy. Plus, if the sow survives and gives birth, she may give birth to a lethal if they inherit 2 roan or 2 dalmation genes. These genes can be hidden even if they do not show any signs of the dalmation or roan breed. Their DNA will be a bit messed up, and lethals can have missing teeth, missing or small eyes, and many more problems. Also, when guinea pigs are 7 months old, their pelvic bones fuse together, so it is hard for the pigs to come out. They are born with their fur already on them. Breeding is not for piggie newbies.
There is also the over-population factor. Many guinea pigs get euthanized a day, whether you realize it or not. Many people think only cats and dogs are part of the over-population, but they are not. Try searching http://www.petfinder.com if you want to find really small guinea pigs or pregnant sows. Make sure you know what you are doing before you adopt a prego, though. Please note that not many of the United States's guinea pigs are listed on Petfinder, yet in most locations, you can usually find a guinea pig within 50 minutes or less from all locations. If you cannot find one, then you can keep checking for a few months. Some people can also arrange transportation for you if you contact the shelter. They may agree to go half way or even MORE.
I just found your question while searching, and figured I'd answer it. Please note that this answer is not meant to be rude like a few of the answers on the particular subject. :)

Is my guinea pig so mean or is he just dominant?
i have a guinea pig named mikey and i just got another named popcorn hes 2 weeks old and my other guinea pig tries making with him and we made shur that popcorn is a boy
Answers:
You may want to seperate them until popcorn is older. At 2 weeks it is difficult to be sure you have correctly sexed them. typically you should wait until they are over 3 weeks old or longer to be sure.
We had a male and thought we were putting another male in his cage. In his attempts to breed with "him" he killed her. She was a female and was sexed wrong.
Seperate them until they are older. Males do not typically try to mate with other males.
maybe your guinea pig is gay
You have a gay guinea pig
Bad guinea pig! Bad! Into the deep fryer with you and I hope your replacement is a little bit more gentle.
he's just waiting for the correct time.
Sounds like he's just showing that he is the alpha male by being dominant.
Its a territory fight since they are both males. Male guinea pigs are known to fight.
see if he likes to carry a whip and wear leather and chains. I don't think he's mean. He's just exploring his sexuality, but tell him that his partners should be consenting guinea pigs.
A guinea pig should still be with its mother at 2 weeks old. He is waaay too young to be sold. A male guinea pig should be separated from its mum at 3 or 4 weeks old (depending on whether its trying to mount siblings and mother) and should not be sold till it is at least 6 weeks old.
Mounting is just a dominance issue to do not worry about that - unless he is fighting and drawing blood.
Wow the above answers are just pointless.
Males and females BOTH mount - it is a dominance issue. The one mounting is basically saying 'I'm the boss'. Females do it when they are in heat.
As for 'males are known for fighting' - babies don't. They will only fight if BOTH boars are adults (12+ months old). I have two pairs of boars that get on fine - one pair are brothers, the other pair is unrelated.
I feel for that poor baby boar though. That poor baby it too young.
Your guinea is just frustrated and dominant I have two male guineas and one of them who is called coco is always trying to mate with buddy it is where there is no female in there for him to mate with I have also had a male guinea in with my rabbit years ago who was a female and the guinea still tried to mate with her. Just keep an eye on them and try to give them two of everything so they have equal dishes etc. Good luck and let me know how it goes

Is my guinea pig pregnat ?
i had my guinea in a pen with a boy guinea which is my friend's guinea what happen is i just got it and i needed it to
stay at my friend's place because iwas getting the cage ready
and they were togher for 3 hours ! and then today we had them togther and they were doing action ! not big action but a wee bit and the male would hump her ! but she is only like 4 weeks old ! could she be p-r-g-n-a-t ! were would u get a preg test for gp's !
Answers:
There is no pregnancy "test" for guinea pigs. You will just have to wait and see if she starts getting bigger. Gestation for cavies is between 59 and 73 days. Yes, they can get pregnant at that young age, which is terribly hard on your sow.
It was very irresponsible of you %26 your friend to put them together. They are going to do what nature intended them to do. There are too many homeless piggies sitting in shelters and rescues. Why add to that? Additionally, you may lose your sow in the birthing process. That would be very sad.
See http://www.guinealynx.info/breeding.html... and http://www.guinealynx.info/reproduction. for information about cavy pregnancy. Then be prepared to find the babies a GOOD home.
I'm sure that she is pregnant because even a little action can do BIG things. even though she is pretty young, the are sexually mature at about 2 weeks old.
there is a possibility she could be pregnant.
...
but why would you put a female guinea pig and a male guinea pig together in the same cage anyways?
that is the reason why pet shops seperate males and females.
so they don't reproduce like crazy
if she is I want a baby..seriosly
You really should have known better. What else did you expect to happen? That is why there are so many pigs with no homes. Please see that it doesn't happen again. It takes only a few seconds for the deed to be done.
Research and read all you can about pregnancy in guinea pigs. You're going to read a lot of scary info. For example, 1 in 5 guinea pigs (under 8 months) die giving birth. That's only the beginning. You'll relize then what risk you have put your pig in.
I wish the best for your pig, and I hope you will learn from this mistake.
I bet so. Good luck...
PREGNANT not pregnat. You'll notice if she's pregnant if her belly gets bigger and rounder. Guinea Pigs are mature at 2 weeks of age, so she probably is.

Is my guinea pig pregnant?
hi, my piggy wont let me pick her up recently and she is putting on weight very quickly, could she be pregnant
Answers:
Sorry, but your guinea pig MIGHT NOT die giving birth!
I had two sows that have birth at 2 1/2 yrs old.
Carefully hold her on your lap and feel around for ''Bumps''.
Check this out - Theres experienced people on there that can help you www.guineapigforum.eamped.com :)
Is she a new piggy? When mine was new she acted that way and put on weight rapidly. But, as it turns out, she wasn't pregnant. If she isn't new, has she had any unsupervised contact with male piggies? If she has then it is a possibility she could be pregnant.
Hope I helped! Good luck!! :D
my guinea pig was acting like that and was gaining wait quickly and it turned out she was pregnant =)
i only have a dog and shes just heavy
I'm sorry but if your piggy is pregnant here is whats going to happen...
Your piggies pelvic bones have already closed when it comes time for your piggy to give birth she will die. Because
the age guinea pigs stop giving birth is 6-8 months old so if
your piggy is past that age this spells D-O-O-M for her!
sorry bout' the news!
~Hope I helped
when my brother got his from the store it was pregnant...it had four babies!!
It's an advanced age for a pregnancy, but she could be okay. Monitor her carefully and be prepared for an emergency vet visit if necessary.

Is my guinea pig pregnant or just fat?
I bought 2 guinea pigs just over a month ago as a birthday present for my daughter. The staff told me that they were both girls and didnt mention anything about 1 of them being pregnant. I do not know if she had mated with a male guinea pig whilst being in the shop. What are the pregnancy signs in guinea pigs? The reason I am asking is because I live in Spain and the majority of vets do not cater for small animals. Any help would be great!
Answers:
It is highly likely that she is pregnant as sows are capable of having babies at just a month or so of age. One of my girls was housed with boys (where I brought her from, she is no longer housed with boys) and I thought that she was pregnant especially when she became fatter, I worked out that she was just looked fatter because she was underweight before!!
This is a list of things that will happen if she is pregnant:
Week 1: No signs
Week 2: Sow may start drinking more
Week 3: Sow will start gaining weight, there will be a tightening of the abdomen muscles.
Week 4: An experienced breeder will be able to feel small foetuses
Week 5: Sow usually looks noticeably pregnant, taking on a rather rounded appearance. You will be able to feel the outlines of the foetuses.
Week 7: You will be able to feel 'quickening' this is when the babies kick
Week 9: It may become difficult for the sow to move around but she should still be active and eat and drink as normal.
The pelvic bones will separate sometime during this week
Week 10: The babies will be born
Do note that if she is pregnant the chances that either the mum or the bubs will have a problem during the pregnancy is high. You should feed her a high vitamin c diet (at least 20mg although 40mg is better) and do not handle her in the later stages of pregnancy. Once they are born she will pretty much look after them her self, at about 3 weeks you will need to remove the males. In the meantime do a lot of research as you will need it.
Is it a female and has it has 'close contact' with a male?
hey don't panic. you don't need to get ultrasounds for guinea pigs. they're fine. and in fact they will breed like crazy.
check out on the Internet for answers. good luck!
my guinea pig was fat n he was a male but u dont no could be preganant
Chances are she is pregnant .If she is pregnant just hold her . You will be able to feel the babies moving around and kicking just like with a human mother . Make sure if she is that the other one is not a male . Males will kill the babies .If it is a female she should be fine . They usually have 2-3 babies . The babies will be born with their eyes open and ready to eat Guinea pig food .
There is a good small animal forum at http://www.repticzone.com you might want to check out .
try going to guineapigfun.com and maybe you can find some answers.
well think of when you were pregnant look for the same signs you had in the guinea pig
its normally to hard to tell
you should take her to the vet or if there is not a vet neer you then get on the phone to an animal specilist or the pet shop where you bought her they should be albe to tell you wether she is pregnant or just fat. also reduce her food and top up her ater then if she does not eat atall then shes problaby pg but if she gets thinner and is still eating and drinking take her to the nearest vet in spain that caters for all animals and still get her checked incase she has lost the baaby or something.

I volunteer at an animal shelter and have become the resident guinea pig expert, fosterer, and rescuer. I currently have 11 pigs in my care. I've taken care of two sows through their pregnancies.
Pregnant guinea pigs get really big. Huge, doubling in size, and they become extremely avocado-shaped. They become much heavier. They also don't move around much as the pregnancy progresses.
But the most tell-tale sign of pregnancy -- once a pig is a few weeks pregnant -- is that you can easily feel the pups moving inside her. Pick her up gently and sit with her quietly on your lap. Place one hand gently on the underside of her belly and the other on one side and see if you can feel any movement ... not tummy gurgles, but actual movement of feet and heads.
If she's pregnant, especially if she's 70 days along, the movements will be extremely obvious. Unless the pups are stillborn.
Another option (and perhaps the best if you cannot feel any movement but strongly suspect she's pregnant) is to take her to your local animal shelter or ASPCA and ask if they can tell you if she's pregnant. At the shelter where I work, the staff and volunteers are very helpful when people come in with questions like this.
If she does turn out to be pregnant, it is imperative that you separate the pups by sex when they reach 3 weeks. Otherwise you'll end up with more. And trust me, it's really hard to find good homes for them. There's no shortage of unwanted guinea pigs in the world.
how did it get pregnant in the first place? if it has been with male guinea pigs with in the last month or 2 then its probably pregnant
don't listen to sugar baby love because THAT is abuse!!!!
ask a vet is all the advice anyone here could give!
Man poeple can be so rude. This is an honest question people, possibly by a younger person, meaning child or young teenager. Leave her alone!!!
And stop being so rude!
Cassie dont worry about those people. Here is a copy of some information I found on Pregnancy in Guinea Pigs.
"The single most important breeding consideration is that female guinea pigs should be first bred before 7 months of age. If the first breeding is delayed beyond this time, serious (sometimes life-threatening) problems with delivery are encountered. Females should be first bred between 3 and 7 months of age. Males should be 34 months old at their first breeding. The guinea pig's heat cycle lasts 16 days. Female guinea pigs can come back into heat 15 hours after giving birth. This is called a "postpartum estrus," which means that they can be nursing a litter and pregnant at the same time!
Pregnancy lasts an average of 63 days. The larger the litter, the shorter the term of pregnancy .and vice versa. The duration of pregnancy for guinea pigs is unusually long when compared with that of other rodents."
Good luck and take care of your Guinea Pig.

Is my guinea pig okay going to be okay?
I keep my guinea pig in the laundry room and I'm just wondering if the laundry detergent odours will hurt him. (We keep our bleach containers closed and there is no smell. He eats and drinks regularly (a lot! :) and I feed him timothy hay, water, fruits and vegetables and guinea pig pellet food.) I've already had him for 4 months and he is really healthy!
Answers:
Sounds like he's doing well %26 you're feeding him well!
It would be great if you could put him in a place where he gets lots of interaction from you %26 the rest of your family. He might get a bit lonely in the laundry room if he's all by himself for long periods of time. Would you consider adopting a same-sex buddy for him? Pigs do much better when housed in pairs.
Best of luck!
it sounds like your guinea pig has a great home! i don't think any ill effects could be caused by keeping him in the laundry room.
i guess he should be fine but dont you think he should be kept in a room where you go alot or at least the famly room or something so he gets lots of attention.
sounds like he is fine . I would move him while you are doing laundry, but if hes fine after 4 months he will be ok .
if you keep the cats out and dont let the odors escape from the containers you will be fine! he sounds like hes doing great!
good luck!
I'm pretty sure that he'll be fine. But having done alot of research after getting my 2 girls, I've learned (and experienced) that Guinea Pigs have VERY sensitive respitory systems. I would be so afraid of a chemical leaking,a spill or a top just not put on right because some one was in a hurry. The fumes from that kind of stuff would just scare me out of that. There's are home made cages you can make, you can even make a top. ( i have 2 guinea's and made my own cage, i have 4 cats) Not to mention, the sound of the washer and dryers slamming shut would startle me enough to have a heart attack if I were that small, along with other noises the machines make. I guess what i'm saying is that I think is a bad idea.
First of all, did you know that guinea pigs actually require 7 square feet or open cage space, minimum? If you want your guinea pig to be completely healthy, I'd suggest getting or building a cage for it. It's easy, I'm 14 now and I built my guinea pigs' cage when i was 11. It's also fairly inexpensive, and easy to clean. Here's a link:http://www.guineapigcages.com/
Second, guinea pigs have very sensitive respiratory systems, so keeping it in the laundry room is NOT a great idea. He may not show any signs of illness because guinea pigs are prey and, instinctively, do not. So he may actually not be as healthy as you think. Please think of a better location for him.
It's great that you provide your pet with such a great diet. Just please give him more room! Guinea pigs need to be able to run around and get some exercise!! And move the cage to your room or something, away from those fumes.
Good luck to you and your piggie!
He should be fine, just make sure that no-one sprays any sprays. It would be better if you could bring him out into the family area where there is more traffic or you could consider getting another same sex cage mate. How big is your cage? I was just thinking that if your cage was smaller than 7.5sq ft then you could make it bigger and include lot's of toys like toilet rolls stuffed with hay and parsley or a plain cardboard box with a big hole cut out. As he is housed alone and sort of away from the rest of the family be sure to spend lot's of time with him, cuddles and floor time will brighten your piggys day.
Addition:
If your cage is too small for two piggys why not make bigger. Cages like cubes and coroplast are cheap and can be made bigger as time goes on. I understand that this just may not be able to work at this point in time so just try to include your piggy in everything that you do (you know what I mean!!).
you shouldn't keep your guinea pig in the laundry room because if any detergent gets in his/her food it could harm your guinea pig. And another thing too is that the sound of the washer and dryer might scare it and cause stress.Stress can lead to a shorter life.
Guinea pigs do well in living rooms, family rooms, etc. ( out of touch of small children who don't know how to hold them and other dangers, of course.) But if you cannot put him in a place where more people go, he should be alright.
NEW EDIT:
I have my C%26C set up so my cat cannot get in. There are ways you could do this. Go to www.cavycages.com and see ways you could keep your cats out. You should use cable ties instead of connectors, though, because connectors often come apart, and if your cats jumps ontop of the cage, they can fall through. C%26Cs are the only way to create a big enough cage.
The laundry room is the worst place you can keep your guinea pig. It is too hot and too humid, you are going to make them sick.
Any good cage will protect them from the cats. Keep the pigs in your room and keep your door shut.
Go to C%26C cages, it's at cavyspirity.com, and price them. I am a big fan of large cages (10.5 sq. feet for two pigs), but if you don't have the space, or the money, buy or build one a little smaller that will suit you.
Please get those pigs out of the laundry room, and please God tell me your washer and dryer aren't in the garage in the middle of summer. Guinea Pigs cannot regulate their own body temps, and will have a heatstroke if put in direct sunlight and in a temperature above 78 degrees. Please, put them in your room, or give them to a guinea pig rescue in your area so that they don't suffer...

Is my guinea pig ok?
my guinea pig is 5. She feels very thin u can feel her bones and she wasnt like this before. Is she ok? What r some foods i could give her for her to get better?or any other recommendations u can give me.
thanx
Answers:
feed her more or take her to a vet if you are worried
Give her more of her pet food. I believe you can also give them raisins, but I'm not so sure. Maybe its just that she is getting very old. How long do live? Sometimes when pets get older they stop eating their food. Also, you can give her sunflower seeds.
Unfortunately Guinea Pigs have short lifespans usually 4 to 5 years. I hate to tell you this but it might be going thru kidney failure or some other organ failure and is starting to pass away. When an animal is old they tend to lose weight, eye sight, and develop of health issues. The only advice I could say is take it to the vet. Make sure it doesn't have wet tail. Keep his habitat clean. Feed him pellets, dark leafy greens, timothy hay etc. Best of luck.
Watch her eat. Does she eat what is given to her or is she not eating at all? Is all the food gone when you feed her again? With her age it is hard to say what is going on. Check her teeth too. Are they in good condition or are they broken or loose? Is she getting the proper amount of vitiman C? She could just be getting old and there is no cure for that. Most Guinea Pigs live only 4-6 years.
Do you have a vet that you usually take her to? Or know of one that specializes in exotic pets? If you do or can find one get her in and see what is happening.
feed her some fat !!NOT SUGAR!
it's sick
Its really great your piggie has lived so long! She is considered a senior.
It is typical for them to lose a little weight as they get into the senior status. However, a large drop in weight can indicate health problems. I would take her to a vet for a checkup to make sure nothing is wrong. She could have teeth issues that are preventing her from eating enough.
Meanwhile, watch her eat. Does she eat all her pellets %26 hay? Is she eating her veggies? Does she appear to be chewing well? Is she drinking? These are things the vet will need to know.
Good luck.
Has she lost any weight?
I have noticed this with my 4 year old sow so it is probably just an age thing. Both of them are getting on a bit. If she is losing weight though or stops eating, get her to a vet!
Good luck
wow your guinea pig is 5??i was told that pigs live for only 3 years and that scares me cos my pig is 3 yrs 1 month old.feed her lots of water.since my pig doesn't like water i mix it with his grass.my pigs dream food is cucumber.and a biscuit in the morning.i hope your pig gets well.just incase you would like to know-my pig weighs 950gms. and looks fat and healthy.
Give her alfafa not timothy hay. alfafa is very fatning but that will be good for her. and give her extra treats. also does she eat seed food or pellet. give her seed for awghile. and incase she has some disease get her shecked out by ur vet ASAP
good luck
At 5 she is a senior citizen, and like senior people her heart is getting tired. The bones being felt are because she is losing muscle mass. Think of an elderly persons arms. This does not mean she is dying. I have one rescue piggie that feels this way and has for years. She's 11 years old. You can give your piggie alfafa hay for extra calories.
Wow, that is a long time for a guinea pig to live. Be thankful you have her that long. I'm sure you can't really do much for her.
She is probably just going through the normal aging process. If you think about it, I'm guessing she is like 100 in people years.
Just enjoy the time you have left with her and keep her as comfortable as possible.
i would take her to the vet
give her some vitemins in her water for a start (they do have drops to put in the water, just look around) and take her to a vet, she could be sick. And give her a little extra food too.
make sure she gets vitamin c take her for a check up
She's lived quite a while! Poor thing, she's probably getting old, and losing weight. Maybe try feeding her more, and like mention above, observe her eating habits. Check her eyes, nose, and bottom for discharge, and the best of luck!

Is my guinea pig ok if he has mucus around his eyes and doesn't walks on one leg?
I just got him and i don't want him to die before he gets to like me. Maybe he needs more vitamin C.
Answers:
Did you buy him like that?? Usually if they got mucus around the eye it means they have an eye infection, try bathing it with cooled boiled water. If he is limping he may have an injured foot. I would take him to a vet to get him checked over in any case. The person you bought him off shouldnt have sold him to you inless he was healthy. 'Pets at home' give good advice and they usually have a vetinarary nurse on site for any enquiries.
What kind of question is this?
Of course it's not okay for this to be going on, you need to take him to the vet who takes care of guinea pigs/small animals.
of course its not ok! vitamin c wont do anything..did you call the pet shop you bought him they should have to pay for what is happening to the animals they are selling no animal deserves to be in pain!!
no no vitamin c wont help, now you march right down to that store and swap him for another, you should never have got him if he had discharge. choose a healthy alert one, it isnt fair if you have to pay the vet bills. if all the guinea pigs are like it then report the shop.
of course not!
get it to the vet!
If the place where you got him from has a health guarentee, you need to bring the guinea pig back to them for a refund.
If you don't have a guarentee on him, please bring him to the vet right away. He needs medical attention.
No, I would take this as a bad sign indeed. Mucous around the eyes can be many things, but it's most likely a sign of an upper respiratory infection. Him not using one of his legs is also not a good sign. The animal needs to see a veterinarian, pronto. Personally, I'm not a fan of returning the pig to the pet store - there's not telling what will happen to it once it's handed back. However, I would at least contact the store to let them know your recent purchase is ill. URI are highly contagious, and it's likely that if your pig has one, so do the other pigs that shared its cage.
Please seek a veterinarian. The pig has a better chance of survival with you than back with the pet store.
Seriously? You had to ask this question! No, of course he is not ok. Vet, now. He needs antibiotics for his infection and possibly pain medicine for his hurt leg. Sounds like he has an URI and a vet needs to look at his leg. NOW!

NOW!
Is my guinea pig jealous??
i have a guinea pig and i just bought a pomeranian puppy , i've been very happy with the new puppy and i haven't put a lot of attention on him and now when i touch him he bites me.

You may want to try washing your hands thoroughly before trying to pet or pick up your piggie. He is probably smelling the dog on your hands %26 reacting to the smell. I'm not saying your Pom is stinky! I'm just saying that he can smell the dog %26 doesn't like it.
Secondly, the less attention you pay to your piggie, the less bonded he'll be with you. Its important that you spend some time with him. It would really help him if he had a piggie buddy in the same cage with him to keep him company. Guinea pigs are very social animals %26 can become depressed when they're kept by themselves. Won't you consider adopting him a same-sex buddy from a local shelter or rescue? You can find one near you by visiting http://www.petfinder.com/ %26 doing the quick search on the left side of the page. There are so many homeless piggies out there that would just love to come be your piggie's buddy! Please consider this.
Best of luck!
Animals do not have feelings, You might want them to have feelings. However, all they have is instinct.
I think that your guinea pig doesn't like your new dog. He is taking his dislike out on you. I would keep the dog out of where the GP is and set aside time for the GP.
He might be jelous.I had a guinea pig once, and I also had a dog.Just try to give them both equal attention!
I would think so, I would try to introduce them to each other. I had one guinea pig named Marshmellow then after a couple of months I thought that maybe she would want a friend so I bought chocolate Chip. Then I introduced them waiting to see if their was going to be trouble and none. But the first three weeks I paid more attention to Choco. Instead of Marshmellow and that鈥檚 when she started to bite me so what I did was I took them out and did exactly what I did to the other, if I petted one I pet the other. But that might be harder for you because it's a dog and it's a piggy?? Well I would introduce them to each other and then show them you love them both. It's better to have two friends than one good one?? If you know what I mean. Hoped I helped, sorry if didn't.
Animals actually DO feel emotion; they are much more complex than most people realize. It's like me saying a person who speaks latin doesn't have feelings because I don't understand what they're saying.
To answer your question, guinea pigs do sometimes get jealous. He's probably feeling cranky because you haven't been giving him as much attention. I would advise getting your piggie a (same-sex) guinea pig companion. A great website is http://www.barmy4boars.co.uk/ .

Is my guinea pig having a 'period'?
I've just noticed that my female guinea pig has a bit of blood round her bum, does this mean that she's having a guinea pig 'period'?
What can I do about it or should I just leave it?

The above answer could be correct. It could be stone related. However, many many pigs heal fine from surgery to remove stones. You just need to find an experienced vet who knows guinea pigs.
BUT before you freak out too much. It could just be a Urinary Tract Infection which is treatable with guinea pig safe antibiotics. (take this list with you to the vet http://guinealynx.info/dangerous_medicat... ) Guinea pigs are so low to the ground that they tend to pick up UTI's occaisonally.
Either way, you need to get to the vet. It is not a period. GP's don't have periods when they are in season.
All females do have periods. You could just wipe it off every couple of days and change the bedding. If it continues for more then 3 to 4 days you should go to the vet to make sure it's not a cut. Actually you should just make sure and go to the vet immediately if you want
i had two female guineas for five years and they don't have a period. i'd take her to the vets.
Female rodents are meant to be perpetually pregnant so they aren't wired to have periods. If she's bleeding, something's wrong. First check to see if she's cut herself but if it looks like it's coming from inside then you need to get her to a vet.
Mu guniea pig had the same problem. Sadly, this is not as easy as her having a period. It is most likely caused from kidney stones. It can be very painful when the guniea pig has a bowel movement. Best thing to do is take her to the vet. They will give her an x-ray to determine if this is the cause. My guniea pig has very large kidney stones, and she was constantly bleeding. We thought about putting her to rest. But, luckily, we were able to give her a special formula. The vet gave it to us. I do not have the name. But, it is a dry mixture of timothy hay crushed up pellets. You then mix this with water and force feed it to the guniea pig. My guniea pig was better after a few days. Anytime she has another outbreak you can just ask the vet for this mixture (it is not reallly a medecine, more of ground up dry foods mixed together.) and give it to her until her symptoms go away. If this does not work you may need to look into surgery. However I don't suggest this because guniea pigs do not take well to anethesia and can die from it.
lol yea its probally a period. i flipped out when that happened to my dog and then my friend told me all female animals have periods. but if it lasts longer than 4 days take her to the vet. hope i helped

Is my guinea pig depressed?
She always just sits there, she never purrs anymore, and doesn't come to me when I walk into he room anymore. Also, she hardly ever squeaks anymore.
Answers:
I agree with everything Jenn said.
It is very possible that she's depressed if she's by herself or not played with much, but more likely, she's not feeling well. Does she sit in one spot with her fur kind of puffed out? Does she try to face the corner or wall? Has her eating or drinking or pooping habits changed?
See http://www.guinealynx.info/normal.html... for some very good information on "what's normal" for a pig.
Good luck to you %26 your piggie! I hope everything is okay.
wtf? i have had like 6 guinea pigs in my life and have never heard them purr
get another guinea pig so ur old one can have a friend :) and get her some new toys foor extra happynes :) hope ur guinea pig gets happy :)
i would say yes try giving her a special snack once a week that should perk her up something sweet uve never given her before or try getting her a boyfriend or another companion.
i don't think they get depressed, it sounds like she is sick. Most animals act oddly when they get ill. you should take her to the vet.
does your guinea pig ever get out of the cage and roam around? If not maybe you should let him/her out once in a while.
I agree that she may have some ailment like constipation also called anal impaction or other. Guinea pigs need attention like any other pet so take her to the vet for an examination. If that is not feasible then read up on Guinea pig health at: http://www.oginet.com/pgurney/index.html...
As echoed above, you need a vet.
A depressed/unhappy guinea pig in my experience, tends toscratch their hair out, eat less, and generally don't take the care of themselves. Also become quite nippy.
At wendy: our (my family's) guinea pigs used to purr a lot when happy, alongside very noisy squeaks! They also licked us, which is apparently for salt. But ignored the salt lick + mineral one we tried..
are you sure its not a cat? guinea pigs dont purr.
How long have you had your pigger? What did she used to do when you walked in or gave her "treats"? What diet do you have her on? How big of a cage do you have her in?
Guinea Pigs are notorious for hiding their health problems as they are prey animals. If you're noticing this big of a difference then you really do need to have her checked out by veterinarian experienced with guinea pigs, as soon as possible.
If she gets a clean bill of health then please seriously consider getting her a friend (either another female or a neutered male). Guinea Pigs are herd animals and therefore are happier with others of their kind ~ no matter how much human love and attention they get.
Make sure she has timothy hay or some kind of orchard grass accessible to her all the time ~ their digestive systems need this. She should also have a high quality timothy hay pellet, and at least a cup of green leafy veggies every day.
Do you make sure she has a good source of Vitamin C? They need this ~ Green and Yellow Peppers are a great source of this. If they don't get enough Vit C they can get Scurvy. Could this be her problem? If so, Vit C is an easy answer. Please do not use the vitamin or mineral drops in her water, either.
Sorry this is long, but there's so many possibilities!
All in all, First thing to do ~ get her to a vet ASAP!
P.S. for the others above ~ Yes, some guinea pigs purr. Some, at times, chirp like a bird, and some even give kisses! : o )
yes they purr, when they're happy and comfortable!
She sounds depressed.
Is she eating, drinking...etc?
Do the obvious sick check to make sure she's ok.
But if she is and is still mopey like that, I'd make sure you make more time to hold her and play with her, she sounds lonely.
It depends if you think she looks sad in the face. But from the signs that i have just read from you it's a good possibility. I would highly recomend you getting a room mate for her.

We could talk about our guinea pigs, I have 2 and their names are Popcorn and Candy! Peanut is really cute too, but if we put them together they would have Piggy Babies. Popcorn and Candy are girl piggies. Popcorn's nickname is Puppy, and if you say "Popcorn!" she will not look at you, but if you say "Puppy!", she will.
Candy's nickname is The Candymeister, and her other nickname is Canders McCanderson. And around Christmas her nickname changes to CandyCane.
You should think about giving Peanut a nickname too.
Please e-mail me to talk to me more about your piggy.
E-mail me even if you don't want to, say something like: "No, I don't really want to talk to you."
But I would appreciate it if you did.
Here is a good Guinea Pig Website: www.guinealynx.com

Wow, the 2 answers above are quite wrong. Your cage is too small. For two pigs you should have at least a 30" x 50" cage, bigger if you have males. Males tend to need more space. www.guineapigcages.com has CHEAP, HUGE cages that are the best for your guinea pigs.
It's great that you are going to get a friend for your pig! Please adopt one from your local shelter or look on petfinder.com. There are many many pigs that need homes that would be a great friend for your pig.
Introduction techniques is the key to your pigs getting long. This site has the best introductions techniques. http://www.cavyspirit.com/sociallife.htm...

Its a alittle small. You cna make a bigger cage for cheaper than buying one. http://www.guineapigcages.com/ Introduce them on no mans territory. They will need a bigger cage so they can get away from each other. You have the same size cage as mine but we are building a new one.
you should probably make a c%26c cage. they are cheaper then buying a cage and the proper size. most cages from a pet store are waaaaay too small! oh and please adopt!

That cage is big enough. People are soooo critical when it comes to guinea pigs, but I'm not. I think that the cage is fine. It is good that you give him plenty of floor time. It keeps them occupied and gives them exercise. You might consider putting them outside during the day in a wire enclosure. We put ours outside during the day in summer and let them run free around the yard (with a waterbottle and plenty of hiding places handy). They enjoy eating the grass, running around, and their cage stays clean a LOT longer! It's only a suggestion, though.
When you want to introduce them, take them out into a new area and put them together. But if you are getting a new cage, just put them together in the cage when you have it ready. That's what we do and it works all the time. Any time that you get a new guinea pig, there will be fighting. It's unavoidable. It's natural. And I wouldn't worry about it. :) They have to have some way to establish a pecking order. If I were you I would put some peices of fresh vegetables or fruits in the cage to distract both of them when they meet. Other than that, leave it up to them! It may take a while, but they will get used to each other!
That should be plenty of room. As for introducing them I would intro them through the cage one inside one out or in another cage. This allows them time to smell eachother and get acclmated. Males are harder to introduce than females. Give them a few hours to get to know eachother then try putting them together. Make sure you have thick gloves around so you can seperate them if it gets bad and turns into a fight. Trust me you don't want to get bit by fighting guinea pigs.

Is my guinea pig a nut??
i'll rub his belly and he lays down like a doggy .he falls asleep with me ghen i take a nap and i just put him back in his cage and he is running around it like a crazy person!what the heck is wrong with him lol and he is squeaking

nothing is wrong. he just loves it when you pet him. your lucky to have a nice guinea pig.
my guineas used to like being put on their backs. that's cool. gerbils won't lie on their backs tho : (. it just shows shows that he's tame and he trusts you. since he's on his own it's important that you give him attention like that.
I guess he loves you then! Squeaking is normal for piggies. Mine used to chirp like birds at night and at the crack of dawn they'd wake up and start squealing.
lol sounds just like hes hyper my 1yr old does that its nothing to worry about they all have different personalities!
you're his only companion, he loves being with you, and doesn't want to be apart. I wish mine would do that, I've had him two months and he's still pretty freaked out.
No.Nothing is wrong with your guinea pig.I have two guinea pigs and its normal for them to squeak.
he just loves you lots!
Does he lay on his back? This could be a sign of heart problems if he is content with being on his back.
Here is an example from guinealynx of a sow named Marilyn here were her signs.
Marilyn: approx 4-year old sow
Signs: lack of muscle tone, content to lie on her back when held (abnormal for a prey animal), very quiet demeanor both in her cage and being held.
Auscultation: normal
X-ray: enlarged heart View 1 - View 2
Treatment: lotensin 1mg twice daily for 3 days. Her activity level declined slightly, so the dosage was reduced to 0.8mg twice daily. Muscle tone improved, activity level increased, less content to be placed on her back.

It sounds like if he takes naps with you, and is lazy around you he could have heart problems. Once again you need to join guinealynx. Go to that link above and check out the other symptoms for heart problems. You're really starting to worry me, and annoy me by your lack of knowledge on your own animal.
Imagine if your mom decided to have you, and every time you cried, or acted odd she went here for a solution. You need to find out some more information. I'm not being mean, I'm begging you to do something.
Hes happy and really likes you! thats great!
Awww thats so adorable that means he loves you and trusts you and he is happy =]

Is my gerbil still growing?
mY gerbil, Fat Slug, is male and about 7 months old. He is a lot smaller than either of his parents, so i wondered is he still growing or will he stay this size?
Answers:
They are adults and ready to breed at 4 months of age.
i dont know but it appears to me that the head in ur avatar is still growing
I have noticed that if you put them in a bigger home/habitrail/cage, they tend to get bigger...

Is my gerbil ok?
Just when i thought everything was going to be ok everything went wrong! I told my brother to watch out for my gerbil while i go clean my room for about 10 to 15 min. Out of nowhere my brother yelled and i ran down as fast as i could and saw my gerbil biting ferociously on a fake mouse my brother had put in the cage! I took it out immediately and my gerbil went along with it. He fell on the floor and thank goodness he was ok. Until i realized he had a bloody nose! He has had this problem already about the bloody nose but it went away. Now its back again. I yelled at my brother and never let him near it again. I will bring it to the vet asap but is his nose ok. If i new i wouldnt have let my brother take care of it. Poor gerbil i didnt mean to hurt him. Somebody please help me.. him.

Because these animals are very small, even a little bit of blood loss can be a big deal. If the gerbil continues being active, it is most likelty going to be and is currently ok. Wouldn't be a bad idea to have the vet check it anyway, just to ensure there is no persistent bleeding. I wish you all the best and hope your gerbil is ok.
Oh!Im so sorry okay well i know how you feel my hamster Twix who died and i was heartbroken.broke her leg coz i dropped her by accident(but thats not why she died) so your gerbil should be okay because when i was picking out my hamster Swirlie another hamster i was holding jumped out of my lap not to far from the ground maybe an inch from the ground jumped out and her nose began to bleed and they took her to the PetSmart vet place...so it should be okay but if worse comes to worse take it up to PetSmart or Petco...I really hope this helps!I know you feel bad but you didnt mean to...hope Gerbil buddy is ok!

I may not have a gerbil, but I have a Genia pig and I was trying to put him in his cage %26 his door was closed %26 he jumped! he lost all of his front teeth and hurt his eye, BUT he is FINE!! His teeth grew back and his eye is doing better. I felt ssssooooo bad after that accident I cried. So don't feel so bad, things like this happen. Your gerbil will still love you!!
I have heard and read in different places that a gerbils boogers are read, maybe it was just boogers. But he could have been really bleeding, I don't know...
In first grade we had 2 pet gerbils I remember one had a bloody nose, I don't remember what happened though, I hope your gerbil is ok!
my gerbil had a bloody nose once so i took it to the vet and it turned out it had a cold

Is my gerbil going to die? Kind of funny story...lol?
One day, while I spent the night at my friends house, my little sister(5) went into my room to play with my gerbils. She is NEVER allowed to play with them. By the way, this happened like almost a year ago. I had bought my gerbils a hamster ball, which they hated :-(. lol. And it came with a stand so I could put it in their tank. It was in there and it was plastic. My gerbils chew on everything, and they had chewed on the stand, so it was jagged. One of my gerbils, Nibbles, was under the ball, which is fine, when my sis went in to play with them. She didn't want him under there, so she grabbed the tip of his tail and pulled him out. She also started to pull him up in the air. And then he fell back into the cage. But guess what, she was still holding on to about an inch and a half of his tail. She told mom that she cut off my gerbil's tail, and she didn't even use a scissors. I think she was traumatized...jk. Someone said that gerbils can do that, but is that true? Is it for protection?
Answers:
No it's not normal and it's not for protection. I assume you are thinking of what some reptiles do to distract their enemies. It's like having your arm or leg ripped off. You can survive, just as the gerbil will, as long as there is no infection. It should go to the vet unless this did happen a year ago. You should NEVER pick up a gerbil by it's tail. The only animals with strong enough skin on their tails are mice. Even rats should not be picked up by their tails. The tails of gerbils are really delicate and can be injured easily, especially if you have the incorrect type of wheel. You should move your gerbil habitat to a place where your sister cannot reach it or lock your room. I did not find this story funny at all thinking of how much pain that poor defenseless creature was in.
Your gerbil is completely fine. He will be ok but get him check out by a vet in case he might get infection. He only lost a portion, right?
I don't see anything funny about your story.
No, gerbils don't lose their tails like that - your sister must have cut off his tail with her fingernails or something else.
Childrens tiny nails can be razor sharp if they're too long.
Perhaps she should be supervised in the future if she will be handling any animal. Age is no excuse for animal cruelty.
I hope you made her feel bad about hurting your gerbil! He should be fine. I would have him check by your vet just in case.
Aww that is sort of Sad.
Accidents do happen. Maybe you should consider putting your gerbils higher up so that if your sister does go into your room again without anyone knowing she will not be able to reach them.
As for your gerbil I am sure that he will be fine, just keep an eye an him to ensure there is no infection.
First- If this happened almost a year ago, why would you think he is going to die now?
Second- NO this is not normal for gerbils. It may not kill him , but it it not normal. It would be sort of like saying, "Is it normal for a human to lose his hand" just because a person's hand got cut off? A person can survive the injury, but it is NOT normal!
Third- What about this story could possibly be funny? Would you want us to laugh about it if you got your hand cut off?? Would you say, "I guess you just had to be there?"
I have never seen it happen but yes I understand they slough their tails as a last ditch defence against predators, and that they recover very well. I knew someone who had this happen and they sellotaped it back on! Isn't that awful?! Of course it rotted and the poor creature was stuck with a lump of rotting meat taped to her tail! Yuk yuk and yuk!
wow...deppressing
Read John P's answer, I agree with him..and you also need to keep the cage higher up or with a tight fitting lid so that your sister can't torture him..
I don't know what half of you people are talking about when you say that a gerbil's tail falling off is NOT for protection, but it definately is. I'm not saying that it's completely normal, but that does not mean that it is not uncommon.
I don't think that the reason your gerbil's tail fell off was because of the jagged area, but because your sister pulled him by the tail. You should NEVER do this. If you do, the tail will either "deglove" or just break off. This is a defense mechanism (in the wild, if a predator grabbed it by the tail, it would break off in order to get free). Now, I'm not saying that by doing this it is not painful for the gerbil, of course it is! (It's like when you get a cat declawed - which I hate when people do that - it's like taking the cat's fingertips off!)
Anyway, you should probably lock your door the next time you leave. You wouldn't want that to happen again, would you? And I'm also I bit baffled that someone said "age is not an excuse for animal cruelty". Her sister was 5, and I'm sure that she didn't mean to. She said that she was almost traumatized for goodness sake! Anyone who thinks that when a person commits an accident or a mistake is a bad person, or accuses them of animal CRUELTY seriously has their mind mixed up.
Just take more precaution when you leave your gerbils alone again, ok?
And by the way, why are you asking about this now?

Is my gerbil dying?
well I've had my current two gerbils for almost 10 months and they both looked great two days ago but yesterday and this morning i got them out and thought they were fine because my aunt told me just to watch their coats and if it was shiny they were still healthy. my black gerbil, sharpie, had a shiny coat as did my two - toned gerbil, s'more, but when i got them out they were both extremely light so i checked to see if they were dehydrated and sharpie's scruff stayed up for 2 minutes. I've tried giving her water and tried feeding her but she won't take anything. we've already restored S'mores health but we are extremely worried about sharpie because she is hardly moving and cold to the touch. she is normally a speed demon and we have her rapped up to keep her warm. there is only one vet in town that treats gerbils and they are very expensive so my parents will not take my gerbils there again. especially after the last gerbil i had that died from the medication.
Answers:
you could try apple juice or kool aid or just sugar water. the sugar gives them a lot of energy and liquid.
All you can do is make food and water available, if there is a treat they like a lot then feed them that, whatever they will eat..
You are doing all you can, there may be some antibiotics you could get from the pet store but it might do more harm if there are no other symptoms.
good luck with your gerbil.
I don't know if your gerbil is dying, but you should take it to the vet, because if sounds really sick.
Try giving it water useing a small eye droper..
it COULD be that she is either pregnant or that she is hibernating, she will wake up in 3-4 days if she is hibernating.
take it to a cheaper vet, even if they dont treat gerbils they still had to go to vet school or something so they can at least tell you whats wrong
Put it out of it's misery. It's wrong to let it suffer.
Well i think that your gerbil might be dying cause the same happened to our dog..
It doesn't sound good. Have you checked its teeth? If their teeth go bad, gerbils tend to stop eating and drinking normally. If they both were having problems maybe they are in a draught or near fumes. Try moving the cage. To be honest, it sounds very close to the end. Try it with some apple if you can. That might get some fluids into it. I hope it all goes well, they just don't last as long as we'd like sometimes.
If you don't take them to the vet to get chek-ups and make sure they are OK, you aren't a good pet owner and DO NOT deserve to be able to have any pets. She needs a check-up. They're supposed to get check-ups @ the vet once in a while anyway!
I would check their teeth and try to feed them and give them water. If their teeth get too long they cant eat or drink.

Is my female gerbil too ugly for mating?
My female gerbil looks ready to mate, but the guy couldn't care less, are they shy to do it in front of me, or is he gay?
Answers:
have you tried putting a little bag over her head?
That is a stupid question there are know gay gerbils. and they don't look at looks.
a. it is possible that one is mis sexed
b. one may not be ready
None of the above.
It is probably either because one or both of them is not ready yet or they don't like being in captivity.
does she just look ready to mate...or do you know for a fact she is ready...some animals just dont want to mate with each other...and thats a good thing, there are to many little rodents in shelters and places that need a home and all your doing is adding to the problem...if you want more gerbils, go buy some, or rescue some from a shelter
(yes, they do have rodents shelters)
She looks ready to mate? I have yet to be able to tell when a girl gerbil is ready except by the behavior of it's companion. Girls go into heat about every 4 days. It's very likely one or both are not old enough yet to be interested or they are the same sex.
Why do you need to breed these animals? You should really stop trying, since you obviously don't know a thing about breeding gerbils, and you're not trying to better the species by doing so.
are u dumb?
maybe.

Is my degu lonely?
he is 2 years old and loves to be petted. but if i pick him up he bites me! do you think he needs a friend? or will he get mad at me?(he's VERY hot tempered!). i dont want to irratate him and i dont want him to be lone either.. what should i do? by the way someone told me he's too old to get along with any other small pet i put in his cage.
Answers:
A friend to your degu would be the best as degus are very social animals and are bored when alone. And 2 years isn't old age for a degu at all. I would try to introduce to him a young degu male (about 6-8 weeks).
Pets tend to bite something they haven't tasted before. Sometimes you don't have to pick it up to show it love. Give it something to play with. It will love you more.
Degus are very social animals and are best kept in pairs or groups. It must be another degu though, you can't just throw in "any other small pet".
Get a second degu and a temporary second cage. Let them play together outside of their cages at first. Introduce them slowly. Next, try putting your older degu into the newer degu's cage temporarily and under your supervision. If they get along after several days start to put the new degu in the old degu's cage, once again under your supervision at first. Leave them together for longer and longer periods of time until eventually they can stay together all the time.
However, be aware of the possibility that your new degu and old degu won't get along. So, if you don't want to risk two degus in two seperate cages, don't get another degu.
Degus relate well to humans, but due to their highly social nature it is far better for their welfare to keep them in same-sex pairs or more. Two or more males may be kept together, provided they have been housed together from an early age. Keeping degus in pairs is very popular; degus bond strongly with other members of their 'group' and this is often extended to include humans who spend a lot of time around them. Degus should be kept in large roomy cages with lots of frequently changed straw and sawdust, for the animal to dig in. Hay should be provided freely as this helps to keep their digestive system healthy, and enables foraging behaviour. Plastic-bottomed cages will often be destroyed due to gnawing (although this can sometimes be avoided by supplying other materials for chewing) so housing degu in all-metal cages is required. Also, because of their gnawing nature, plastic toys and other objects must be kept out of a degu reach, because some plastics contain components such as plasticizers that are toxic when ingested. Finally, the social nature of the degu can make them lonely, so humans keeping single specimens should take care to talk to their pet a lot, place the animal where it can take part in daily life of the household, and get them frequently out of the cage (degus like cuddling with humans, and can sit still and even sleep on laps if comfortable, but shouldn't be left running freely). The recent upsurge in interest in the degu as a pet has had both positive and negative results. The increase in popularity has created a deluge of degus being put up for adoption because of ignorant or unsuspecting owners unable to care for them properly. Of course, this has also increased awareness of the needs of degus as unique rodent companions.
well...degus are quite social...i've read theat its suggested that you eather pets or hold the daily, or if thats too hard to get another degu, for it to have company...now with the way you describe yours it does sorta sound like it could injure another degu...if it gets annoyed, or because he isnt used to it. play with your degu often. they love attention...with me i had a degu who used to always bite, but after its companion died, and i played with it more, it nvr bit me, and i mean like nvr. and yes, like someone else said, give it more toys, and things to do and explore so its not too bored.
good luck!

Of course, this has also increased awareness of the needs of degus as unique rodent companions.
well...degus are quite social...i've read theat its suggested that you eather pets or hold the daily, or if thats too hard to get another degu, for it to have company...now with the way you describe yours it does sorta sound like it could injure another degu...if it gets annoyed, or because he isnt used to it. play with your degu often. they love attention...with me i had a degu who used to always bite, but after its companion died, and i played with it more, it nvr bit me, and i mean like nvr. and yes, like someone else said, give it more toys, and things to do and explore so its not too bored.
good luck!
Is my bunny just a natural or do all Bunny's kiss you?
my baby girl Bailey is a holland lop and she has been giving the cuties kisses is she a natural kisser or do all bunnys do it
Answers:
my baby bunny used to kiss and as he got older he body started to change and he started to bite. if we neutered him he might of not bit.
my bunny used to kiss me. =] r.i.p
I have had three house bunnies and only one would give kisses. I thought he was unique in that way! I am so glad your bunny loves you enough to give kisses. You must be a grat bunny parent!
I've owned a few bunnies in my life and they really do "kiss." It's so cute. A trick you can do that's neat is pretend like you're cleaning your face in front of her and if she thinks you're "cool" like her friend then she will start to clean herself, too. The one vet at my practice told me to do that and it worked.
My lop always gives me little bunny licks when I reach in her cage to give her more hay in the morning. It's so sweet.

Is male guinea pig's pee stronger then females?
Answers:
You mean smell wise?? No.
Male guinea pig wee does not have a stronger smell then females. As long as you clean out their cage on a regular basis and use the correct bedding.
no idea - I clean my girls out before they begin to smell, minimum twice a week

Is lemon OK for hamsters?
My hamster chews on the bars of his cage even though I have other toys for him to chew on. I know it is very important that he does not chew the bars (ibelive it causes brain damage) and I heard I shoud put lemon on the bars of his cage is this ok for my hamster?
Answers:
Lemon contains citric acid, which is bad for a hamsters sensitive stomache. It can make your hamster sick. Some people keep their hamsters in glass aquariams to solve this problem of bar-chewing. If your hamster doesn't chew on the toys that you've already given it, try other ones. I give my hamster twigs, toiletpaper rolls, and popsicle sticks to chew on. My hamster used to chew on the bars of its cage as well. This is how i got her to chew her chewtoys instead:
I gave her the toys to chew on while she was outside of the cage, where she couldn't chew the bars. This satisfyed her need to chew, and when she got used to chewing them outside of the cage, she chewed them while she was inside too. Also, try fastening the chewtoys to the bars. That might help her to start chewing them. If this doesn't work, spray bitter apple spray on the bars of her cage. This can be found at a pet shop.
Try giving your hamster a better variety of chewtoys, because your hamster might prefer these over the ones she currently has.
Good luck!
Hamsters can't have anything with citric acid because they're tummies can't handle it. You're right about the brain damage part. You can try putting bitter apple spray on the cage bars so he won't have to keep chewing.
No, lemon can make your hamster sick.
they can't have lime and not a-lot of orange too
hamsters can't have anything with citrus acid b/c it will mess up the digestive system and will have stomach problems
i wouldnt.. they have very sensitive tummies and lemon id very acidic. my hamster has the same problem.. someone told me to get apple spray from the petstore... i have heard it works just sprey it on the bars of the cage and they dont like the taste much... good luck =]
To keep him from chewing, you can use Bitter Apple small animal spray. It's safe for your hammie and will help keep him from chewing on things he shouldn't.
You may also want to try giving him a wider assortment of chewies to see if you can find something he'll like better... just a few ideas... old toilet paper and paper towel rolls are wonderful (don't use the kind with glue)... pine cones %26 pecan branches (as long as they are free of any bugs, chemicals, or fungus)... dog biscuits, dry uncooked pasta, and organic salt/sugar free banana or apple chips... be creative, but avoid anything that may have glue, ink, pesticides, salt, sugar, or any other chemical or additive that may be unsafe or unhealthy.
Lemon is very bad for your hamster so dont use it.
Or you can just let him be...happy chewing his cage, it realives them from stress and wares down there teeth.
It wont give them brain dammage so dont worry about that.
chewing on the bars is natural, hamsters just feel the need to chew everything they need, the chewing will help your hamster file his teeth down so they dont become over grown, but if you really cant stand it i would just switch the cage, i dont trust the bitter apple, the citric acid in lemons doesnt hurt rodents but since i dont htink your hamster has been exposed to the high acid it would be hard on him. the decisions are pretty much up you, how you make the one you thik is right
You should not put lemon on your cage, hamsters shouldn't have ANY citric fruits or acids,it's definnaly not good for them.
There stomachs will not be able to handle it.Check out this link that tells you all about the diet and food sources of hamsters!

Is it wise to clip my rat's claws?
I have a rat that is in need of having a clip job done on her claws-is it a wise idea for me to cut them? If so how short should I cut them, and how do I cut them?
Answers:
If you have trouble holding onto your squirming ratty then claw clipping is a two-person job. You can use a pair of baby nail-clippers for this purpose, but if you are squeamish then a vet can show you how it's done and do it for you until you feel comfortable with the procedure.
Clipping rat claws
http://search.yahoo.com/search?search=cl...
Sharp claws have been an ongoing problem for rat-keepers and sometimes their ratties :) A rat's nails are long and sharp and that's normal. Some people have tried putting a brick or a rock under the water bottle, but reports have come back that the claws now seem sharper. Some people might suggest sandpaper, but sandpaper is a very dangerous product to use with rats. Any tiny cut resulting from the sharpness of the sandpaper will allow a bacteria to settle in the wound and this results in Bumblefoot...very difficult to treat.
http://search.yahoo.com/search?search=bu...
Are you allergic to the rat's scratches? Some people get large, itchy, welts. This is an allergy to the protein in the rat's urine. This is easily remedied by wiping the rat's feet with a wet cloth before you play with him.
It's neither wise nor unwise to clip a rat's claws. It's your preference and done only if the claws are a problem for the owner. Me, I just put up with this mild allergy.

"my life has gone to the rats"
Get a pair of baby fingernail clippers and only clip off the very tip. You will probably need someone else to hold the rat for you. You could put a rock or something in the cage for them to wear down their nails on too.
I have not done it yet but i am going to go get a baby nail clipper and trim mine and my brothers rats nails but when you i suggest doing when they were sleeping so they don't move as much
Is is wise..well that depends...if you are comfortable with doing it, then it should be fine ( it's wise if you are going to get it's nails clipped either way and you don't want to spend $30 to have a vet do it )...If you are afraid of it and don't think you can do it, then I would say no it's not wise...
When I clip my rats nail, I use a cat claw clipper, it's shaped better for the claws than baby clippers are.
Have someone hold onto the rat...hold the rats body close and tight agains theirs.
Pull one leg out and have them hold it still at the base while you hold the foot.
With your other hand gently pull apart one toe at a time and clip the nail...with most rats, you can see a pink quick in their nail...it's a thin pink line that goes from the base about half way up the nail...
Make sure you DO NOT hit the quick, it's painful for them and can be hard to control the bleeding ( some have to be taken to the vet to make the blood stop, others bleed a drop then they're done )
If you aren't sure or cannot see the quick then clip only the very tip of the nail, just enough to take off the sharp point.
If you are uncomfortable when it comes down to it, then it's best to take it to a vet, even if they do not specialize in small animals, most will clip their nails and show you how to do it.
I hope this helps.GOOD LUCK!!

Is it weird for girls to like rodents?
I like rats, hamsters are guinea pigs and people make fun of me!
Answers:
When I was growing up, I had (not all at once!) a guinea pig, a hamster and two rats that were sisters. I also had goldfish (what kid hasn't) and a turtle, too. Oh, and by the way I also like dinosaurs and insects-- I had a praying mantis for a pet once. I turned out okay!
If rodents are what YOU like, that's what YOU like. It's who you are. Anyone who makes fun of you just for being who you are isn't your friend!
heck no
nope its not weird...
i guess it is fine........
Haha my roommate LOVES rodents...she loves to touch and play with them. I just figured she has a specialty with animals. So no, I don't think it's weird for your to like rodents at all. Rodents CAN be cute...furry, small, etc.
I, on the other hand, hate rodents. The closest I can get is looking at our family's pet guinea pig, but I never touch or pet it at all. Rodents just creep me out, especially since I hate rats, so any other rodent like hamsters, etc. creeps me out.
no way, i think that is very cool. dont ever let people tell you it is weird. just because your a girl doesnt mean you cant be into rodents as pets.
Hi! OMG! I am the same as you! I absoulutely LOVE hamsters, guinea pigs and EVERY kind of rodent possible. People give me strange looks, but hey! Rodents are the best! I love them, and i am not ashamed. You shouldn't be too!
RODENT PRIDE~~
PS. i keep 2 hamsters, and a guinea pig. I want to get a pet rat!
lol no. just cuz you're a girl doesn't mean you can't like certain things! don't let people make fun of you. stand up for what you believe in !
no way i LOVE!! them so much.
Its not weird. The people who make fun of you are mean and even weirder then what they think you are. My friend is in love with hamsters and when people make fun of her she agrees with them, so the people who tease her stop the teasing cause they find out that it doesn't bother her.
It's not weird at all! Many girls like animals that are cute and fuzzy. Rodents are cute and fuzzy! Puppies and Kittens are cute and fuzzy too! So what's the difference between liking something cute and fuzzy, or liking something cute and fuzzy?
I rest my case.
NO I like them too and I am female.I also like IGUANAS FROGS TOADS SQUIRRELS CHIPMUNKS and other stuff like that so you aren't wierd at all and if you are then you are not alone
It's not weird to for a girl or anyone else to like rodents. I like all kinds of critters. As for the people that make fun of you just ignore them.
No way don't listen to them there is nothing wrong with that
Rodents are great companions %26 lots of fun. People who try to tell you what you should or shouldn't like are the weird ones.
No i think that girls like rodents more than guys do. As long as u don't have to many pets and u don't obsess about them it is fine
No its not. Those people are just jerks and I bet if you show them a rodent they will scream and run away :D
I love all animals, but especially dogs and rodents. I don't think it's weird at all. If you think about it, they're often the 'first pets' we have as children...so you get attached young.
It depends on who you ask. Some people might say that it is weird some will say it isn't. If you ask me it is not weird for girls to like rodents.
I don't think its weird at all
I like all rodents, besides the undomesticated ones that run through our walls (but thats a different story)
the only thing that i cant see liking are thier teeth
absoulutly not ! i never thought i would like those critters until my son got mice rats hamsters they are really neat litltle critters. we don't have a guinea pig yet but i'm sure theres one that will show up soon! enjoy your pets and don't worry what other people think they are the ones who are missing out
i certainly hope not otherwise im wierd to
id rather like my rats, than most other people i meet, to be honest, as they dont show thie ignorance and prejudices that people do
as proven by your question
let me tell you a story about one of our rats
my son is autistic and he couldnt speak for may many years, no matter what therapy or interventions were trid nothing could 'switch the lightbulb on'
along came goldie, a pink eyed fawn hooded, my son fell in love with her and her with him, they were inseperable, many nights we'd go to check on him and find her curled up on his pillow where he had sneaked her out. that rat asked for nothing from him except love but gave so much back.
through her he started to form words and then sentences. goldie would 'say' things to him and he would say to us ' goldie says its time i had a drink' or 'goldie says i dont like that food', we knew it was his way of communicating to us his needs and wants through her.
over time he stopped talking 'through' her and began talking directly to us. she had helped him to break the barrier because she expected nothing from him, no responses, no urgency no nothing, just gave him space and time with no impressions or disapointments
today my son is working, learning to drive, taking advanced exams in higher maths,biology,chemistry,enviro... science learning to socialise and learning to live independantly. he is still and always will be autistic but he's far far far removed from the 'vegetable' that he was written off as when he couldnt speak or interact
now we as his parents had an awful lot to do with how he is now, and his determination to own his autism rather than be owned by it has got him to be where he is .
but to my dying day i will believe that without goldie coming into his life he would never have spoken and would have just been written off rather than being the total star and example to all that he is now
so no sweetheart you aint wierd at all
Not at all. I love most rodents - I'm not to fussed about rats as for some reason I have this stereotypical image of a smelling, biting ball of fluff. Mice, hamsters and guinea pigs - especially guinea pigs - are awesome pets and I love all of my pets dearly.

Is it true your hamster can die frow a wet tail?
one of my freinds came over when i got my hamster and said dont wet his tail he will die is this true or is it not
Answers:
wet tail is not "getting his tail wet"...it is chronic diarrhea and
YES, IT IS DEADLY
wet tail is caused by stress (usually from over-handling an un-tamed hamster OR from bringing a brand new hamster home from the pet store)
there are ways of preventing wet tail: I would go natural if I was you, go to the grocery store and buy a fresh head of cabbage, bring it home, hold out a leaf of cabbage in your hand to your hamster for him to take and eat...do this two or three times a day everyday until the whole head of cabbage is gone...by doing this you will be doing two tasks at once: you will be "taming" your hamster (in other words he'll learn to trust you and not be so stressed in his new home) AND you will be preventing wet tail because cabbage has a natural anti-diarrheant (the use of cabbage is what our local Petco does, the manager won't even carry the product "wet tail" medicine in her store because she believes cabbage works better with less side effects)
good luck and congrats on your new hamster

ummm no...baby hamsters can get a sickness called wet tail...but its not bcuz someone wet there tail...it is bcuz they get bad diera and it makes there tail look wet.
Yes, Wet Tail can be a Fatal Disease. It is brought on by stress and looks like diareah
However, simply getting your Hamsters Tail wet, will not cause the disease known as Wet Tail.
If you think your Hamster has Wet Tail, you should go to your pet store immediately to buy some medicine, or if you can afford it take him to the vet.
wet tail is not from you getting it wet. wet tail is a disease that is easily treated. if your hamster does get wet tail (which is simply from having wet bowel movements), go to your local pet store and purchase the product called "Wet Tail". It is about $5 and you put a few drops in its water. The wet tail is gone within a day or so.
Yes, it is absolutely true. Your hamster isn't going to get wet tail from sticking his tail in water though. It's a disease.
The hamster is NOT going to die if his tail gets wet.
There is a hamster illness called "wet tail" where the hamster gets diarrhea....THAT can be deadly.
Wet tail is a disease that is very common in hamsters (and no, it doesn't happen because their tail is wet). It is a virus and it causes them to have an upset stomach and poop a lot (making their whole back end wet which is why the disease is called "wet tail"). This is very serious and most hamsters that catch it will die, even if they are taken to the vet in a timely manner.
Not "a" wet tail, like if you wet it w/water.! Wet tail is a disease that has nothing to do with that! Don't listen to anything your friend says...He's obviously either a liar or just plain ignorant.

If the tail is wet from anti-freeze and he licks it, then yes...
~jaz~
No, that is not true as far as him dying if you wet his tail. There is a life threatening condition they can get that is called 'wet tail'. It is basically an infection in their intestines that cause horrendous diarrhea (hence the wet tail), dehydration and if not caught early, death. Their tails are generally always dry-unless they just walked through a little water bowl-but they should drink from a water bottle, anyways diarrhea is not normal-is called wet tail and can kill them-it is very serious. Just google wet tail in hamsters and you'll be able to read about it more.
Thats not what wet tail is. Wet tail is like a hamster having a cold. Its not like when you wet the tail of the hamster. And yes they can die from it.
it is not true that hamsters can die if they get there tails wet my hamster gets wet all of the time from the water bottel
I think your friend is confused. Hamsters can get a disease of the bowel called "wet tail" which causes severe runny poops in hamsters, leaving the rear end sore, swallon, mucky and smelly, which is where the term "wet tail" comes from. However, although not advised, wetting the hamsters tail would not nessisarilly result in wet tail itself.
That said, hamsters are dry land, desert animals and should never be exposed to water under any curcumatances ( except to drink obviously! ) some fools bath their hamsters, which at some point will result in death.
i give my hamster baths and he is alive but wet tail is a disease...lol
yes mine died at 7 months, at the vet.
Lol. Your friend misunderstood what Wet Tail is. Wet Tail is from when you over feed greens and the hamster has diarrhea. This can be very fatal.
But wetting a tail? Tell your friend that he misunderstood about, and research about it if you want.
Answers:
wet tail is not "getting his tail wet"...it is chronic diarrhea and
YES, IT IS DEADLY
wet tail is caused by stress (usually from over-handling an un-tamed hamster OR from bringing a brand new hamster home from the pet store)
there are ways of preventing wet tail: I would go natural if I was you, go to the grocery store and buy a fresh head of cabbage, bring it home, hold out a leaf of cabbage in your hand to your hamster for him to take and eat...do this two or three times a day everyday until the whole head of cabbage is gone...by doing this you will be doing two tasks at once: you will be "taming" your hamster (in other words he'll learn to trust you and not be so stressed in his new home) AND you will be preventing wet tail because cabbage has a natural anti-diarrheant (the use of cabbage is what our local Petco does, the manager won't even carry the product "wet tail" medicine in her store because she believes cabbage works better with less side effects)
good luck and congrats on your new hamster

Is it true what they say about feeder mice?
I want to save a feeder mouse, and keep it as a pet! Aren't they just like all the regular mice, just cheaper? I have also heard that they will die after a month, because they are not meant to live as long as regular mice. Is that true? I really want to save the life of a lucky feeder mouse, but there is no piont of doing it if it will die after a month.......
Answers:
No, it won't die after a month if you're taking care of it. If it's a healthy mouse, it should have a normal life expectancy.
The difference is probably that the "pet" mice are socialized (handled) and the feeders are not. But mice usually tame pretty easily if they're young.
they are just regular mice, from breeder mice, the store just keeps breeding mice for feeding,
mice make crappy pets,,
alot of feeder mice do die though they are bred band bred and alot of them have illness's that cause's them to die, though there are some that will live . there is no such thing as feeder mice only live a couple of month's, there not made to do that that's insane. a mouse is a mouse, if it does not have an illness that will make it die it will live though 9 time's out of 10 feeder mice are sick and will die. though i have had some that lived.
they are just like regular mice...I've bought a few myself!
No theirs no diiference some of my rats are feeder rats and my one mouse is two the mouse is about two years and the rats are all different ages and all that died have lived a normal life.
The reason that you may think that or have heard that is because "feeder" rats and mice are bred just because. They are not screened for diseases or temperament. They tend to have more medical problems than those that are bred, by responsible breeders, as pets.
I, however, have a 2 year old feeder rat. She is just as healthy as my pet. The life expectancy of an animal is only as long as you can make it. This may mean you have to take it to the vet more often. Make sure their cage is well suited to their needs. Give them plenty of activities to keep their minds going. Feed them the right foods and give them lots of attention.
These are things that extend the life of your rodent.
No, if you take good care of it, it may live up to two years or so...
i wouldn't consider getting a feeder mouse they bite!
My first mice were feeders and they lived five years. That's one old mouse. The only differences between feeders and fancy mouse are that the feeders are not handled and that they are allowed to breed indiscriminately.
Actually, feeder mice live longer, on average, than show mice. You have the same chances as any other rodent pet of picking on that will develope cancer or other diseases. You also have the same chances of getting a biter as you would buying a gerbil or a hamster. My advice, hold the mouse before you buy it. You can check for temperment and for health issues. Don't buy a mouse with tumors, missing hair, or a kinked tail.

Is it true that you can give a dwarf hamster sand to roll in?
i recently read somewhere that you can give a dwarf hamster sand to roll in, is this true? if so where can i buy it from, i know it has to be special sand
Answers:
Yes definitely! A sand bath is WAAAY safer than pouring water over your hamster. You can use chinchilla sand but not chinchilla dust since chinchilla dust is too fine and will hurt them. Sand bathes will keep their coat cleaner and might make them not smell. It is very entertaining to watch the hamsters play and roll around the sand. Just look at this video!
http://youtube.com/watch?v=p_w2p5iomlu...
if your getting dizzy watching that fast roborovski hamster watch this
http://youtube.com/watch?v=toegcx3llj8...
isnt it cute how they roll over? That is how they take a bath in the wild as they live in the desert.
Dont listen to kaceyrae06! Chinchilla dust is very bad for the hamster! Buy chinchilla Sand! Plus chinchilla sand is less messier than the dust.
yes it is true. i had a hamster nad she loved the sand. if you go to a pet shop and ask them to order it for you, they will.
awsome! I want that kind of sand for my dwarf hamster!!
well its not sand pursay its more like a dust you can buy it at peco which is the cheapest or pet smart most animal stores sell it! I have a dwarf hampster 2!
well i have had one before and I would try it out but I really think you shouldn't, I don't think they like it iv had one before so I never tryed tho but wouldn't wana make it mad.
it's not really sand it's like a duct bath for chinchillas, but it's perfectly fine 4 ur hamster. you can get it at petco, or petsmart:)
they LOVE dirt baths!
just go outside and get some loose dry dirt %26lt;FREE>
Their fur is similar, but not as nice, as a chinchilla's. So to clean them without getting them wet and risking catching a cold, you can use the same dust that chinchilla's bathe in. It is a special volcanic dust that takes the oils out of their fur. You can get it at any pet store by the chinchilla stuff. Just put it in a little bowl and put your hamster in and he/she should know what to do. They'll roll around and kinda shake their fur off.
yes, get chinchilla sand if their fur starts to look oily or dirty and put it in a tub, then put them in it.
Its a kind of dirt/dust.. it can be purcahsed at petstock...t
