My female gerbil looks ready to mate, but the guy couldn't care less, are they shy to do it in front of me, or is he gay?

That is a stupid question there are know gay gerbils. and they don't look at looks.
a. it is possible that one is mis sexed
b. one may not be ready

It is probably either because one or both of them is not ready yet or they don't like being in captivity.
does she just look ready to mate...or do you know for a fact she is ready...some animals just dont want to mate with each other...and thats a good thing, there are to many little rodents in shelters and places that need a home and all your doing is adding to the problem...if you want more gerbils, go buy some, or rescue some from a shelter

She looks ready to mate? I have yet to be able to tell when a girl gerbil is ready except by the behavior of it's companion. Girls go into heat about every 4 days. It's very likely one or both are not old enough yet to be interested or they are the same sex.
Why do you need to breed these animals? You should really stop trying, since you obviously don't know a thing about breeding gerbils, and you're not trying to better the species by doing so.
