Is it normal for my pet rat to make noises?

I recently bought a pet rat a few days ago. He is only a few weeks old. The first day i got him he seemed fine but yesterday and today he still acts normal but makes noises while breathing. I've read things about respitory illness but i called my vet and he said its normal and i shouldnt worry unless he has discharge coming out. But other than that he seems happy and playful.

Then don't worry about him even us human make weird noises sometimes haha. If hes happy and playful hes ok you would know if something was wrong.

Your vet is right, unless you find an excess of red discharge from either:
-nose
-eyes
-mouth
-ears
then he should be fine. If you are REALLY concerned and you have the money by all means get him checked out at the vet it will never hurt to just be safe =)

Sneezing and some discharge is normal, but if he's making sounds when he is breathing he needs some antibiotics. I've had vets tell me too that I shouldn't be worried about upper-respitory because it can't be cured. But the symptoms can be treated with Baytril, and when it gets to the point where they are making sounds when breathing, it's serious. You may need to find a vet that knows more about rats.

what kind of bedding are you using? rats are allergic to shavings, especially cedar shavings. at any good pet store they'll have cardboard shavings. your rat might be at the early stages of an upper respirtory infection. when he gets drowsy and has discharge from his nose he will probably have a severe upper respirtory infection. switch beddings as soon as possible if you have shavings.

Can you describe the noises?
If he is wheezing, he is sick. If your vet wont see him take him to a vet that specializes in rodents. If it is clicking that normal. They grind their teeth when they are happy. However they also grind there teeth when they are stressed. But you will be able to tell the difference, it will sound threating. I wish I could describe the stressed grinding better but my rat has never done it.

I posted a question like this the other day as my rat (5-6 weeks old) started making a funny noise, a bit like a hyena laugh. He is perfectly happy, playful,inquisitive (just plain nosey), been vet checked and is fine every other way... I think he just likes to make lots of noise.

my rat had been making a weird noise as well...i noticed it this afternoon and it woke me up just now...its sort of like a purring noise...i cant really explain it...but i shouldn't be worried unless he is sneezing or there is discharge, right? but when i held his chest near my ear...i didn't hear any congestion, just that weird noise...and he it seems he only does it when i try to pick him up or when i let him out to play..
