Is it ok to feed my pet rat this way?

im considering gettin a new pet rat and im just curious if its ok to feed her like lettuce and stuff instead of rat food
Answers:
You can feed her lettuce as a treat, but rats still need their staple diet (rat food).
Rat Blocks are the best, very little lettuce it will give them wet tail. If you feed them any lettuce, romaine is good. Make sure they have a good diet, very little veggies and fruit. About 10% of their diet should be fruit and veggies. Rat blocks are a must, they are the most nutricious.
Apples carrots lettus and normal rat food that what i give my rats. The apple seeds will kill it so dont let it eat Apple seeds.
We have 3 rats and give them the rat food. For treats and snacks they get cheese, deli meat, cheese crackers. Mainly whatever they want they get.
Rats make great pets. They are very loyal and friendly.
She should have a basic diet of rat food.
My rat's diet consists of about 50% rat food now, and that's a good balance for us. To start with you'll want to feed her/him on the same food the shop/breeder does, to reduce the stress of a new home. From there you can slowly introduce new foods, over many weeks, even months.
Unless you're going to get nutritional values of all the fresh foods, your rat won't get all the vitamins he/she needs. I actually feed my rat on hamster food, which he's doing fine on. He doesn't like pellet filled foods, so refuses to eat any of the rat foods I can buy at the moment, I've tried 4-6 different rat foods to date, none he'll eat.
A couple of good sites about feeding:
http://www.freewebs.com/rattyrescue/azra...
http://www.rattycorner.com/
Both refer to a diet which can be found here:

That diet may suit you better than traditional bought-only foods.
Rats, like people need a certain diet to remain healthy. Their diet need specific amounts of protein, iron, vitamins and minerals, etc to be nutritionally complete.
Your rat should be on a high quality lab block, and can be supplemented with fresh foods (sparingly as treats). Lettuce is not a good idea(iceberg) as it is mostly water and has no nutritional value. If you are thinking of feeding your own diet you should check with a vet to be sure it fits the rats nutritional needs.
It is alright to feed him lettuce,carrots..once in a while. Dont feed them too much green vegetables because it can cause constipation. But you ABSOLUTLY NEED rat food because they have pretty much all of there daily vitamins that they need to have a long and healthy life.
I Hope i Helped you!
Good luck!
i can feed a rat pretty much anything try giver her chinken but if on bone cut it off so they dont choke!?!?
yes its ok to feed her that. they LOVE fruits and veggies. make sure its not too fresh or your rat will get diarrehea. i would recommened feeding it romainiane lettuce instead of iceburg lettuce cause that has no nutrition for it.
Good Luck!
I have had many pet rats and they have all lived 6-8 years, well over their 18 month life expectancy. I fed them about 25% prepared rat food (or rabbit food), generally they ate this only in the dea of winter when fresh fruits, veggies and grains were less available. I never fed them meat (Though I doubt the tiniest bit now and then would hurt them). They definitely showed food preferences too, all but one LOVED fresh cantalope!
Rats need their rat blocks or foods formulated for rats.
But supplementing the diet with fresh fruits and veggies is great!

yes, but you should get her some Lab Chow or Lab Blocks to go with it for vitamins. just no celery because they can choke on the threads. ask your local pet store or pet supply store if they have any Lab Blocks or Lab Chow, they probably will
