Is paper harmful to gerbils?

could i possibly use paper shreddings for their cage or will they eat it or would it hurt them somehow?
Answers:
Yes thats fine! I own two pet gerbils, and whenever I'm short of bedding, I just throw some paper or soft cardboard in there. They will have so much fun chewing it into bits. They will also make there own bed, and will design there cage exactly how they want it. My gerbils let me know in the beginning that they did not want anything in there cage. Every single time I put a wheel or house for them in there, they obsessively chew it to pieces. Then they dig and scratch like crazy as much as they please. Gerbils are funny little creatures. They really keep me entertained! Your gerbils might actually have more fun with paper than with regular bedding.
Good luck with your gerbils!=)
paper should be fine ... when working a local pet store we had to use shredded paper at times and they just seemed to carry it around and put it where they wanted it.
Yes it is fine to use as bedding. The gerbils will chew the paper, don't mistake this for eating. The evergrowing teeth of gerbils require lots of chewing to keep them worn down to the right size. Lots of chew toys in the cage will be perfect. Toilet paper rolls are ideal, since gerbils can both chew them and crawl through them Just give them lots to chew and a good suppy of fresh gerbil food, and its perfectly safe to give paper sheddings.
It is safe, however, avoid paper that has been printed on because the ink can be harmful. Shredded paper has no more or less risk of being ingested than other types of bedding so you have to monitor your gerbil either way.
Never use regular paper like what you draw on! My gerbil Loves paper towles but only use paper towels bc it is softer. ( got it from a Gerbils For Dummies book) also another Great tip is...After life yous a toilet paper roll give it to He/ she gerbil and it well climb through it or eat lol. Mine chews it is and puts all the shreddings in a little pile lol
