Is it true your hamster can die frow a wet tail?

one of my freinds came over when i got my hamster and said dont wet his tail he will die is this true or is it not
Answers:
wet tail is not "getting his tail wet"...it is chronic diarrhea and
YES, IT IS DEADLY
wet tail is caused by stress (usually from over-handling an un-tamed hamster OR from bringing a brand new hamster home from the pet store)
there are ways of preventing wet tail: I would go natural if I was you, go to the grocery store and buy a fresh head of cabbage, bring it home, hold out a leaf of cabbage in your hand to your hamster for him to take and eat...do this two or three times a day everyday until the whole head of cabbage is gone...by doing this you will be doing two tasks at once: you will be "taming" your hamster (in other words he'll learn to trust you and not be so stressed in his new home) AND you will be preventing wet tail because cabbage has a natural anti-diarrheant (the use of cabbage is what our local Petco does, the manager won't even carry the product "wet tail" medicine in her store because she believes cabbage works better with less side effects)
good luck and congrats on your new hamster

ummm no...baby hamsters can get a sickness called wet tail...but its not bcuz someone wet there tail...it is bcuz they get bad diera and it makes there tail look wet.
Yes, Wet Tail can be a Fatal Disease. It is brought on by stress and looks like diareah
However, simply getting your Hamsters Tail wet, will not cause the disease known as Wet Tail.
If you think your Hamster has Wet Tail, you should go to your pet store immediately to buy some medicine, or if you can afford it take him to the vet.
wet tail is not from you getting it wet. wet tail is a disease that is easily treated. if your hamster does get wet tail (which is simply from having wet bowel movements), go to your local pet store and purchase the product called "Wet Tail". It is about $5 and you put a few drops in its water. The wet tail is gone within a day or so.
Yes, it is absolutely true. Your hamster isn't going to get wet tail from sticking his tail in water though. It's a disease.
The hamster is NOT going to die if his tail gets wet.
There is a hamster illness called "wet tail" where the hamster gets diarrhea....THAT can be deadly.
Wet tail is a disease that is very common in hamsters (and no, it doesn't happen because their tail is wet). It is a virus and it causes them to have an upset stomach and poop a lot (making their whole back end wet which is why the disease is called "wet tail"). This is very serious and most hamsters that catch it will die, even if they are taken to the vet in a timely manner.
Not "a" wet tail, like if you wet it w/water.! Wet tail is a disease that has nothing to do with that! Don't listen to anything your friend says...He's obviously either a liar or just plain ignorant.

If the tail is wet from anti-freeze and he licks it, then yes...

No, that is not true as far as him dying if you wet his tail. There is a life threatening condition they can get that is called 'wet tail'. It is basically an infection in their intestines that cause horrendous diarrhea (hence the wet tail), dehydration and if not caught early, death. Their tails are generally always dry-unless they just walked through a little water bowl-but they should drink from a water bottle, anyways diarrhea is not normal-is called wet tail and can kill them-it is very serious. Just google wet tail in hamsters and you'll be able to read about it more.
Thats not what wet tail is. Wet tail is like a hamster having a cold. Its not like when you wet the tail of the hamster. And yes they can die from it.
it is not true that hamsters can die if they get there tails wet my hamster gets wet all of the time from the water bottel
I think your friend is confused. Hamsters can get a disease of the bowel called "wet tail" which causes severe runny poops in hamsters, leaving the rear end sore, swallon, mucky and smelly, which is where the term "wet tail" comes from. However, although not advised, wetting the hamsters tail would not nessisarilly result in wet tail itself.
That said, hamsters are dry land, desert animals and should never be exposed to water under any curcumatances ( except to drink obviously! ) some fools bath their hamsters, which at some point will result in death.
i give my hamster baths and he is alive but wet tail is a disease...lol
yes mine died at 7 months, at the vet.
Lol. Your friend misunderstood what Wet Tail is. Wet Tail is from when you over feed greens and the hamster has diarrhea. This can be very fatal.
But wetting a tail? Tell your friend that he misunderstood about, and research about it if you want.
