Is it o.k to buy a hamster from Petco?

Are they healthly lil guys from petco? Or should i buy them from another petstore? thx!%26lt;3

The best answer I can give is that no matter where you get them from, inspect them before you buy and watch them carefully after. A lot of people get the misconception that a certain place has "ill" hamsters. This is because they are very succeptible to disease that is brought on by stress (for instance, moving). Wet-tail is probably the most common ailment for these lil guys and is easily spotted by wetness and usually bedding sticking to their rear-ends. Check for this before you buy, and watch for this after you buy. Also, check the eyes and nose for goo or crusts which can signal upper respiratory infections.
The act of over-handling, handling too soon, or transporting the hamster can stress them easily. It's best to transport them in a dark container (with air holes of course) and to leave them in their new habitat for few hours completely alone. After that, be "around" the habitat, but don't go reaching into it a lot and trying to pet or pick up for a few days. Keep an eye out for those ailments!
To help reduce the likelihood of illness, supplement the diet with fresh orange slices, apple, and even plain "real" yogurt. Supply these things in limited quantities and don't leave them in the habitat too long. Also, it would be a good idea to use a vitamin supplement within the water bottle. It never hurts, and make sure the water bottle is cleaned daily if not twice daily.
Good luck! Also, in case you're interested, I've found, from experience only, that black bear hamsters seem to be the friendliest type. They still take some work, but they seem to warm up the quickest.
Did you know that in some South American countries, that people there actually eat hamsters?
I think your fine with Petco.
yes its fine, thats why they call it PETco
well it depends i am sure that i wouldn't buy a dog or somethin like that from there but i think a hamster would be safe and if you have health questions i am sure they can help you on that. just make sure that it has clear eyes and looks to be in good shape and then you should have a great little pal! good luck
Buying a hampster in petco is totally fine. My sister bought one from there and was very active and healthy. I myself bought a tarantula instead.
I did lol.. i had no problem..i had him for a long time but he died.. all the pets there are good.. dont worry.
You can go to petco and see if the hamsters look healthy. Here is how to tell:
Health Check
In a healthy hamster In a sick hamster
Eyes- Bright and shiny, no discharge
Inflamed, fur around eye sticky
Coat -Thick, with a silky sheen Disheveled, dull
Anal region- Clean Smeared with fecal matter
Body shape- Evenly cylindrical Sides caved in
Nose- Dry Damp
Behavior- Lively, alert Disinterested, apathetic
Petco is a great place that's where i got my hamster. just dont get one at petsmart. they almost torture their animals and they can get really sick and die very quickly. on peta.com there is a lot about it.
Yes it is a legit pet store and not some small business run by some person that may be getting animals illegally or have sick animals, or whatever, a variety of things, I have gotten rats from Petco before and they are great and healthy, sometimes they will also have pets up for adoption that people bring in for free, so if you are interested in that check with someone at your Petco.
Well, I would recommend that you get a hamster from your local animal shelter. That way, you can be saving a life! Also, the Petco hamsters tend to be not as healthy. The animal shelters for some reason, tend to be healthier! If you don't know if your local animal shelter has hamsters, or, you don't know where your local animal shelter is located, Try: www.petfinder.com! Thanks, and good luck,

Yeah, I got one from there and lived 4 years. Though the one near you may treat the animals different, I'm assuming they all get the same training...
yes and if it dies you can return it and get a new one usually
Usually yes but you should make sure that they as well as the other animals are well cared for first - clean cages %26 such . From the time I was about 12 - 16 I've owned lots of hamsters %26 I believe I bought all of them from Petco / Petsmart so you should be fine :]
From my experience, it is safe to buy it from Petco. I have bought three hamsters from Petco, and all of them have been healthy =)!
go to petco!! and if u want ask if the hamster there r healthy
they usually tell u either way tho
its great also petsmart is great 2!
No! Petco is 100% safe. I bought my ferret there!
I bought 4 from petsmart, and three are doing great. one died at 7 months from wettail. I see no problem with getting them there, and the cages are sold there, food, exercise ball and bedding. Get a syrian, they are the most friendly, and you only need one, they are solitary animals. I have one black bear, short hair, long hair. All are fun. Our petsmart only sells females here in va. Good luck!
